mcf57 join:2006-08-17 Cumming, GA | Where is an Earthlink usenet bandwidth meter? I have been using Earthlink usenet/newsgroup service for some time now. It has been working great for my needs, but I recently got a "monthly bandwidth exceeded" notice when trying to access its server within my Newsleecher.
For the future, is there a place I can go to online that will show me specifically how much bandwidth I have used for a particular username at any point during the month/period? |

1 edit | I don't think there is a usenet bandwidth meter on the Earthlink website, but I track it within Newsbin Pro. I have 4 email addresses setup with 4 connections each to get my maximum speed and share the load so I don't reach the cap on any 1 email address. Every email address can download 50gigs a month. |

They claim is was updated a few months back. Of course, back in 2007 when they switched to SuperNews, they said the usage limit (5GB) was gone. |

That sounds about right as it was probably close to what I had downloaded with this certain Earthlink e-mail ID. I was hoping there might be some sort of online usage meter, but guess not. I don't think there is and as suggested, I'm just gonna have to track it within my usenet software (Newsleecher).
I actually contacted a live Earthlink rep (via online chat) about this issue a few days ago and while they genuinely tried to help me out, it appeared they didn't really know how I could get to it either. They suggested several things & said it was in a certain place in my online account management, but it isn't.
Plus, I'm not sure they really know the full extent of how much you are allowed to download (50GB/ID). Probably don't get too many people inquiring about their usenet service so they might not be real familiar with it in the first place. Even some of the Earthlink webpages (talking about newsgroups) are outdated information. Some mention how the limit is 5GB/month & I KNOW that is not right. So its obvious that even Earthlink doesn't have their own s&%t together concerning this topic.
Oh well, I'll just work around it and its not a huge problem. I'm not gonna complain too much & I'm just happy to be able to still have usenet access with Earthlink as most ISPs these days (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, etc.) are totally shutting theirs down. |

mcf57 join:2006-08-17 Cumming, GA | I contacted Supernews and asked them if there was any way of tracking my Earthlink newsgroup usage through them since Supernews is outsourced by Earthlink. They told me the following:
We do not have individual accounts for our reseller's users. These accounts are provided through the reseller.
Oh well, tracking useage will have to occur some other way & I guess it was worth a try. |

| So, does that mean they aren't reporting usage stats back to Earthlink? They (supernews) are the only one's who can track how much traffic any connection is generating. If they don't have individual accounts then they cannot be keeping up with it themselves. |

mcf57 join:2006-08-17 Cumming, GA | Yea, I'm not sure how or who is exactly tracking usage, but someone is cause one of my 7 Earthlink IDs got cut off from being used for a few days (cause I downloaded the 50GB limit). It wasn't a big deal as I basically just used one of the other 6 ids for the time being, but I thought I would investigate and look into if I could go online somewhere to see how much had been used.
So far I've come up short with a definite answer to this topic. Like I said, no biggie as I can just switch to one of my other IDs if needed as they are allowing 50GB PER id. So this essentially gives me a personal limit of 350GB/month (7 ids X 50GB). More than enough for my needs. |

Once you get the warning in e-mail about going close to limit, then it might end the access for the rest of the month.
I wished EarthLink would remove the statistics check link since it has been outdated for years. |
