Giganews INCREASES price!Diamond accounts went up $5 to $34.99 a month. Are they insane?
Edit: Per Newsgroup Reviews the increase will not happen until January 1, 2011. |

Don't care much. The only thing I'm worried about is that lots of indexing services depend on giganews servers, so if giganews ever goes up in flames, I'll be in a world of hurt since I so do not want to deal with header files... |

Here are the New Service Levels:
*Diamond $34.99 (as of 1/1/2011) - Unlimited Usenet (downloads, speed) with 50 SSL Connections, VyprVPN, MIMO Usenet Browser and Search (BETA). The price for Diamond will remain at $29.99 with a discount of 50% off for the first month at $14.99 for the rest of 2010, but on January 1, 2011 it will change to the new price.
*Platinum $24.99 - Unlimited Usenet (downloads, speed) with 20 SSL Connections. People who want just Giganews Premium unlimited and secure Usenet will save $5 a month
*Silver $14.99 - Usenet access 50GB, unlimited speed + 20 SSL Connections
*Bronze $9.99 - Usenet access 10GB, unlimited speed + 20 SSL Connections
*Pearl $4.99 - Usenet access 3GB, unlimited speed + 20 SSL Connections
All current accounts with Giganews will remain at the same price, with the same service levels. Anyone who signs up for or has had a Diamond account prior to 12/31/2010 will remain at the $29.99 price. There will be no increase in fees to any current customer. |

Diamond accounts will be increasing by $5 a month. The new Platinum will include SSL which saves some (including EvilByDesire it sounds like) $5 a month. Other plans will increase by $2 a month but include SSL which was previously a $5/mo. add-on. The new prices go into effect Jan 1, 2011. It will be interesting to see the response. - NGR Newsgrouup Reviews |

Hey that's Cool, giganews decided to charge you guys $5 less a month for Unlimited SSL that I get at usenetserver for $15 less. And for their next trick giganews will raise prices yet again for the same service and folk will continue to be mesmerized with their wallets wide open till they have nothing left! Amazing how Giganews works those smoke and mirrors...what a rip... |

That's ridiculous IMO, especially considering AstraWeb has an unlimited plan for $11/mo with comparable retention. |

Pricing update is listed on the Giganews homepage now. Looks like they went ahead and rolled the SSL into the Platinum account and made the other remaining changes other than the increased Diamond price which is to come Jan. 1, 2011. - NGR Newsgroup Reviews |

I hope the other providers don't get the same idea, though I wouldn't be surprised if overall prices increase. Astraweb had 10 days retention in 2003, versus the 808 they advertise now - and I don't think they had the unlimited $11 dutch porn deal either. =P |

Well Newsdemon has went the other way recently, they have added more features to their premium packages and reduced the pricing from over $22 to around $12 currently. I can not believe so many people "drink the kool-aid" with giganews and are willing to just give their money away for nothing |

Sorry giganews is highly overrated and overpriced IMHO. |

Giganews has never failed me. I have never once seen an incomplete file or a missing one.
Giganews is by far the best. But you pay for it. I use astraweb and even though there are missing files now and then...11 per month is a lot easier to swallow then 35. |

Many people continue to reported this. You are fortunate that the files you download are not affected. Just because you haven't been affected doesn't mean other are not. For what Giganews charges, no content should be removed. Not when other cheaper Usenet providers don't take down content. |

More of a problem for older files as opposed to current files. The point of having long retention is being able to get the files you want at ANYTIME you want within the retention limit. I often find out about shows, movies, games after they have been out for several weeks, months or over a year. Not having to download content almost immediately before it's taken down is something I've come to rely on. Knowing I can retrieve content at my leisure is one of the big selling points of usenet for me. One of the major selling points for Giganews is it's long retention. What good is paying a lot of money for Giganews if you can't retrieve the files you want, ANYTIME you want within the retention limit? |

And please don't rant about the giganews accelerator because all providers now offer header compression - it's called Xfeatures and all decent usenet readers support it. |

If so, why? Being able to download content anytime you wish within an usenet providers retention is not an unreasonable expectation. Not having to rush to download content before DMCA notices is a good thing. More so if your paying premium prices for Giganews. Giganews seems to justify it's higher prices by touting it's premium features and service. Removing content isn't a premium service I'd be willing to pay for. |

I think there is a "bonus" in doing this if you look at it from another perspective.. that is.. if XYZ providers were to be attacked.. giganews would be in a better position to show they are supporting DMCA and copyright holders.. Sure it may not serve you or I as the customer.. but it serves the corporate interest of staying in business Honestly with the fact that a new released game like say "fallout" has been uploaded at least 100x on to the usenet already (alright let's say realistically 15 times with the xbox version and ps3 version?) and will be uploaded at least 15 more times during the next year.. do we really have anything to complain about? |

The content from premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime. Which gets taken down by DMCA notices. Hey, I could care less if Giganews has a big red target painted on it for DMCA notices. Let Giganews be a lightening rod. It's the the posts saying "Giganews is the best" that I have a problem with. Paying much higher prices for Giganews while they take down content does not make them "the best in my book". |

Paying much higher prices for Giganews while they take down content does not make them "the best in my book". I would just let them get about their business.. I'm mainly a "giganews" fan.. but I have balanced or tried other providers in all honestly besides for 240 day retention fiasco they just let go of a year or two ago.. I can't think of any other disappointing thing with them.. I've never ran into content I wanted that giganews had allowed the DMCA to take down.. (its quite possible I dont pay that much attention ) And I want to be clear I don't think "giganews.com" is a good deal.. I think there resellers/other sites of powerusenet.com and that other one are the best deal.. I don't think we need 800+ days of retention that badly right now.. I haven't run into content I wanted "that badly" or rarely that exceeded 600 days on powerusenet/giganews.. There is always going to be someone claiming that giganews is a "Ferrari" and that anyone driving a "Volvo" is a fool.. Just let e'm have their claim.. that's my suggestion.. But the truth is if I did run into content that I needed that was 800+ days old.. I would trust most likely that "giganews" would have it.. and from my experience less so of "astraweb" "newshosting" or whoever.. Also.. I will keep my eye out for HBO or SHOWTIME content removed from "giganews" but I personally have downloaded all of "The Pacific" this summer as it was being "upped" from giganews and "Temple Gradin" hd version/cap also.. and I was unaware of any versions that were missing.. And at some point.. I may consider watching "Dexter" seasons 4 and 5 in HD and californication seasons 2 and 3 I believe.. I'll see if there "unavailable" at that time |
