I don't play MafiaWars. Is that why I am not seeing any qreply problems?

(Rhetorical question, so answering is optional).

I think there are no bugs with it now but whether a pop up or inline is better is a matter of taste.

I have a feeling that if we just went from inline for years to pop up there would be complaints that (for example) after a quick reply there was no sign of the reply, and the move window and close window icons were too small and why can't I resize the popup to arbitrary width (etc).

my view is these auto expanding textareas are better so the bottom line is better either way than it was a week ago.

I've not sent out a "call" for anyone to come post here, FWIW.

You can blame the /forums/buddies page that has a list of your friends' most recent threads. Most of us have each other "friended" on DSLR to watch movements easier.

Also, it's Mafia, not that dumbass flash facebook game.

Chrome could (can?).

I'm not horribly upset. Just a state preference for the prior version.

I imagine I'll get used to the new version, but at a first glance, I'm not impressed.

Not the end of the world, though.

I wasn't thinking anyone did. I can imagine a specific topic use might well favor a pop up.

It's possible that's why I feel this way, but if you were to review my "post entry point" somehow, you'd probably see a 98% usage of qreply. I use it everywhere.

I'm a huge fan of replying-to someone, and in longer threads, doing it multiple times in a row depending on the number of posts to reply to. The new form of qreply just doesn't look or function as well as it used to.

But let me re-iterate, the way your post appends to the post you replied to is fantastic. I very much enjoy that feature. I just wonder could you keep that and bring back the pop-up?

I addressed most of your & other issues. As I understand them they were:
* buggy text box expansion (fixed)
* buggy text box reset of cursor when topic updated (fixed)
* quote next to reply button, instead of at top, requiring extra keypress to reach 'Reply' (fixed)
* moving the mouse all the way from the right of the post to the left (not fixed because I haven't decided whether to move the qreply button to the start of the controls yet)

so I think we don't have to go back to pop-ups now. I'd like to keep pop-ups just for IMs, and extra information windows.

Can you activate focus on the textarea until you figure out layout, please?

Also, is this intended?

yes that is intended, updating the bottom of the topics with new replies is independent from making them within the topic. Everyone is a bright spark they'll understand immediately if they see it close together like that.

As for focus, I don't think you had focus on the pop-up (and you don't on IM pop-ups either), so what is the rush?

so putting focus in the field and suspending topic update while typing would address the problem..
Stupid wrong click...

Anyways, this would be a great interim fix until you decide how to handle layout.

It matters because right now usability is worse due to the travel time.

edit : test

Test to see how long it takes before it refreshes and 'moves' this post to end.

D'oh, I was scrolled up too high. Does this appear after so long or is it instant ?

Edit: Almost instant

When it auto-refreshes and adds the reply, why not remove the inline one at that point too ? I do like it being inline or right below the post being replied to but once the reply is done, it doesn't need to stay there.

because in long topics it isn't as obvious a doubling up as the reply and the new replies are far apart. It also isn't always instant - that depends.

I can have the quick reply turn into a simple "you replied.." marker rather than attempting to show the reply. But having updated html also find and kill other items on the page is a pain, and probably asking for bugs

So .. no animations for firefox users.
I thought you were still tweaking this as it stopped happening for a day or two but today, it's happening again. Is this "animation" something you can disable based on the browser ?
