[ARIZONA] Grand Canyon hike/camp

Anyone here ever done the Grand Canyon?

hiked down/mule'd down?

stayed in the dorms or reserved a room?

roughed it with a tent?

I've always wanted to go spend like a week down there to explore. That's prolly too long though so a long weekend would do - I can pack down enough food and water for myself and a friend for a couple days.

What time of year is best in temperature terms? I know it's a lot hotter at the bottom than it is at the rim, and I hate being too hot. Should I bring a gun (to protect from wild animals?) or will I get myself in trouble...etc.

[edit] Interestingly enough, that credit card bill that got passed recently included verbiage to allow guns in national parks... »www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/1···428.html

My then 11 year old daughter hiked to the bottom in May of 08 and stayed for 3 nights, 4 days at the bottom of the Canyon. On the Havisupai (SP) tribe land. Slept right by the beautiful aquamarine water. Played under the falls. 12-15 mile hike down, can't remember. She was a member of a hiking club for her middle school. Supposed to go back the next May. Never happened because of this, »www.eventective.com/blog/news/20···looding/

So it's totally doable, just do it in the spring or fall.

Edit: It was closed for close to a year and the waterfalls are still just mud. Really sad. I suppose there's plenty of other good places. She got really lucky, they say that place won't be back to normal in 100 years.

never done the canyon proper, but i have done havasupai three times. i've usually gone done around the late march or late september timeframe. in march, the river is more full, but freezing cold. september is hit and miss, depending on the rains received that year.

both of those times, it was still warm enough at the trailhead that we left in the late evening (~1800 or so) and hiked down. we bivouacked around 2300 and then got started the next morning around 0500 to avoid the heat. we were in supai around 0830 and we could relax and explore the river for a few days. very serene. little more laid back than the canyon (reservation land as opposed to national park). i've wanted to do the canyon, just haven't had the time away from work.

havasupai is very worth it.
