Cradlepoint MBR-1000 + MiFi 2200 = ?

I thought maybe someone else here with a Cradlepoint can confirm whether this router is broke. It shouldn't be this difficult to set this up should it?

Also, can you tell me what your power adapter reads? My label reads Elementech 5V 2.5A (should this support the 12V 1.5A router?). I bought this used so I'm not sure if these were the original items included.

Here's what I did in setting the router up:

I used the quickstart guide to be absolutely sure I do it correctly.
* Latest firmware and modem drivers are installed.

Then I plug in my MiFi 2200 via USB into the router... and... I get a flash of amber light on the MDM led. Then it would blink green a few times, then the MiFi will start blinking green as if they were communicating, then a solid green on the MBR-1000, and then at about 45 seconds both of them die.

MBR-1000 leaves me a log. Something about USB being unplugged doesn't seem right. It happens to both ports, and I have tried going through the setup maybe almost 10 times now, trying older firmwares/modem drivers as well and hard-resetting them to try again.

I tested this on my mbr 1000 and my MiFi (without an active account right now)... it did at connect and throw me to a virgin mobile page... and seemed to stay connected.

Make sure you can connect with just the mifi... (make sure it's got an active account and isn't reseting itself due to no programing or something similar)... without the mbr1000 in the picture.

One thing I have found with my MC760 + MBR1000 is their "aggressive modem reset" seems to loose the modem (like you are seeing with your mifi)... you can turn it off in:

Modem -> Settings -> un-check "Aggressive Modem Reset" -> Save

Worth a try. Good luck!

I'm the OP (ShoeFly)... I'm too lazy to log in here but I see they now have a log form in the postbox. Cool.

Well I think I found the cause! Just as I suspected, the adapter that came with the used MBR-1000 did not provide enough power to the MBR-1000 + MiFi 2200 setup.

The adapter that I was sent along with the used MBR-1000 was rated 5V 2.5A which isn't enough for this setup (MBR-1000 asks for 12V 1.5A).
The MiFi is basically a router when untethered so I suspect it needed more juice than the typical USB modem or ExpressCard would need.

So I tested my theory by sticking in the Linksys WRT54G power adapter (which is 12V) into my Cradlepoint MBR-1000 and sure enough, the WAN connection didn't drop within seconds. It actually works now!

Thanks for your help, dib22!

Question: If VMo is too slow to support even one PC what's the point of getting a MiFi? I don't see how you would be able to share it between 2 or more PC's. Does everyone who gets one of these only use it to have the freedom of wifi so they can use one laptop roaming around the house but never turn on a second one?

I use my mifi on 3 pc's. Kids play youtube videos no problem.

I can play one youtube video but it's a little jerky. Three would never play unless they only do one at a time. Actually I don't see how even one could play over a 230kbps serial port.
BTW, speedtest.net is a terrible test giving readings over 200% of the speed you get with most other tests. The ones on here under Tools are more accurate.

Looks like more than 230kbps to me?

Nope, when the wireless modem is connected it say it's a 230kbps serial connection at the bottom of the screen but go to Device Manager and under Modems you will see Virgin Mobile Modem when using the MC760. Double click Virgin Mobile Modem, click Properties then select the Modem tab and you will see a max. speed of 230400. I don't know about the MiFi though, maybe it can run faster.

As I stated in your other post - the U760 and the mifi both operate at much faster than 230kb/sec.

Well I wouldn't bother in your case, but over here I am able to play YouTube without any stuttering and it is much snappier and faster than Hughesnet (my only other choice without the terrible 5GB cap imposed by most other networks).

I got the MiFi so that I can share my connection with others and to connect to it easily on trips.

I bought the CradlePoint MBR-1000 so that the range would increase and so that I can keep the connection on 24hrs whereas it would go into a dormant state or even disconnected (MBR-1000 auto-reconnects) for me when left for hours at a time... plus, it was only $60 used.

once again... that is the speed at which windows is connected to your mc760... not the speed the mc760 is connected to the tower.

yea they sent the wrong adapter for sure

the one shipped from the factory is indeed 12.0V 1.5A
(Leader Electronics Inc model number MU18-2120150-A1 if your looking for the exact one)

have a good one

I know the speed that it connects to the tower is listed as 3.1Mb but the MC760 still has to connect to the PC since it won't work on it's own so it needs to be a lot faster than 230kbps.

the 230k (230400bps) is the control channel to the modem... it's just there so old software can deal with it... it's the reason it can be treated like a dial up connection to the operating system.

open your device manager and youll see a 9600bps port for status (signal levels, ##debug info) and an application port at 9600bps - which is dead on the VM 760 as they didn't opt to put the fancy gps chipset in (to reduce cost) or blocked out with firmware (to retain market difference between sprint and vm).

the modem interface is on another virtual com port and it running at 230400bps (which is plenty fast for AT commands)....

and how does it do it? it is a USB Composite device... so it really has the best negotiated USB speed the port its connected to will give it.

The faster speed works on the USB port with my wi-fi adapter which is recognized as an ethernet adapter but I'm not sure it's working for the MC760 which is recognized as just a modem.
I should be able to tell for sure when my T-Mobile USB modem (which is much faster) arrives and I get a chance to test it.
