Re: Need To Increase Selection

They would if they could. They're unfortunately at the mercy of the studios on what they can offer.

Or they can just start a secret illegal business overseas of selling pirated content and stream 100% of it using a similar platform with a similar breadth of availability as Netflix has DVDs, and the main parent company can just complain "oh our business sucks ... look at that competitor .... if only you hollywood execs would let us sell all our movies as stream subscriptions without all your silly restrictions, none of this would be happening .... at least not as much of it", randomize the availability a bit so it's not so obviously Netflix running the show of the secret company (later investigations find out "they actually rented their DVDs from Netflix! that's why the offerings are so similar!"), and then if played right, Hollywood would fold, and suddenly the secret company would have more and more server problems, and the consumers would naturally select Netflix as their savior, especially once Netflix's selection is restored to its proper level. If Netflix is savvy, they can have their secret company stream pirated content of a few more movies that they currently don't even have in DVD stock, and get an even wider array of products to sell with this deal.

Shrewd, but it'd save the company.

Not sure if it's the best long-term goal, but it wouldn't hurt anybody except maybe a few gross old fats in South California and West Middle NYC. Help clear out some of their cruft, indeed.

It's not going to happen, though, since it's just so damned illicit. I wouldn't recommend it anyway.
