I can only say this on Earthlink dsl home networking set, once we changed router/modem to Netgear all in one product, the issues mostly stopped. 95% of our problems stopped getting rid of linksys router and earthlink's modem they supply. Hope this helps.

Yes, things do go bad after 10 Years or even 5 Years so either your Modem or your Router had started to fail and instead of diagnosing which one of the two were bad you replaced both and that fixed the issue. Pretty common, except the skipping of diagnosing of which device was failing. -- What’s the point of owning a supercar if you can’t scare yourself stupid from time to time?
