Strong signal, but sometimes reconnects every few minutes

U300 on a sprint 3+4G contract, usually only used for 4G (forced) in two places I travel to a lot otherwise I just tether my phone on another carrier.

4 or 5 bars, signal is fine, downloads are fine, streams fine.

Only problem is sometimes it just gets flaky and reconnects every couple minutes.

One odd thing is that I get assigned vastly different ips with each reconnect. Coming from a networking backround this seems quite odd, I've probably seen every /8 range sprint or clearwire owns: 70 96 106 108 173 184 and more I can't recall. The dns never changes at least.
Thats got to suck from a routing standpoint, considering I might be sitting in the same chair the whole time.

I get the impression this might be an authentication/account problem, where I'm getting assigned to the "wrong" network, and some kind of sweep comes along and knocks me off. Eventually I end up on the "right" network (whichever that is) and can stay connected overnight, but its a major pain.

Anyone had something like this happen, and how did you get it fixed?

BTW, last year when I bought the service, even though I signed up for the dual plan (same price) the modem was shipped to a "3G only address", so apparently they only activated the account for 3G. Why in the world they would do this makes no sense, but they did. (its called MOBILE broadband for a reason)
It took quite awhile to get that corrected and not forced to the clear day pass website on every 4G connection. I'm wondering if they somehow screwed the pooch doing it.

I know w/ my overdrive I had issues until I upped the firmware, I would have to reconnect, and this was always 4g only. Might wanna check for a firmware upgrade, and even if there isn't one, maybe re-flash the same firmware.

You could also have them re-verify / re push all the account information, if they haven't already.

I've had BOTH of these problems.

Approximately once a day, usually in the morning Eastern time (between 7AM and 11AM), my 4G connection gets dropped. I've found that if I deliberately disconnect and reconnect in the morning, or late the previous night, then this problem does not occur.

And once I also had the day pass problem. I had this problem when it was disconnecting, and this particular morning it wouldn't stay connected even for 24 minutes, let alone 24 hours.

I called up and all they could think to do was to nuke and reprogram the modem from scratch. Well, you guessed it, IMMEDIATELY the modem "forgot" that it was authorized to connect to 4G, and instead would only connect to 3G without strings attached. Every time I connected to the 4G network, it would say "No 4G Subscription" and take me to the day pass page. The funny thing was that it wouldn't disconnect when I refused to pay for the day pass and instead I just tried to surf, get email, watch or listen to streams, etc. etc. Instead, it simply cooperated, and I successfully stayed connected for about 24 hours.

But the next time I tried to connect (yes, I do give my laptops a rest occasionally!) I went through the same nonsense.

So I called Sprint Technical support. They had me disconnect, close Smartview and REMOVE the modem from the computer.

They then had me sit there with the dead modem in my hand for AT LEAST five minutes.

They then had me remount the modem and re-open the Smart View.

Wouldn't you know it? I was back to the normal message of Ready: 4G, and the subsequent connection worked completely normally.

Who knows what they screwed up? Who knows what they fixed? I sure don't.

I guess I should make clear that these 24-hour disconnections ARE NOT occurring in the midst of flaky, unreliable or slow connections. On the contrary, as long as this 4G stays connected in my neighborhood the performance is outstanding, almost up to max spec (just under 10mbps download, just under 1mbps upload).

Which is why, generally, I'm happy, in spite of these disconnects every 24 hours or so.

Yes, we can,

Charles

It turns out that is EXACTLY the schedule of the disconnects. One morning I connected at 642AM. Wouldn't you know it, at EXACTLY 642AM the next morning I was disconnected. Apparently they really do have a clock on your connection time.

Now, as long as I know about it (I wish they'd told me), I'm fine. I can backtime my activities, properly plan, and disconnect and reconnect at a convenient point before the 24 hours are expired.

After realizing what's going on, memory began to stir. As I recall, Verizon Wireless 3G also worked that way when I had it three or four years ago. Perhaps the Sprint 3G network is unique in the sense that it DOESN'T have that 24-hour rule. Perhaps most dynamic IP connections implement that sort of 24-hour rule; I don't know.

I had a similar issue on my HTC EVO 4G. It was EXTREMELY frustrating.

I live across the street (5th floor, direct line of sight to the tower). I also verified that this was a clear/sprint 4G tower by going to www.clear.com/coverage. Went into debug mode to see that my signal strength couldn't be any stronger if I tried...

But it would scan, connect, stay connected for about 15 seconds, then disconnect. As you stated, it would do this and grab vastly different IP address' every time.... ONLY at that location... not any place else. What was interesting was, if I kept the data active (stream radio, download, etc) it would stay connected. It was particularly frustrating for me because if I forgot to turn 4G off my battery would be drained in a matter of hours as it would scan/connect/disconnect over and over.

I tried resetting my phone etc until I borrowed a friends phone and saw that the same exact thing happened, so I know that it was tower specific at that point, since it wasn't my phone, and only occurred when using that specific tower.

I started a hopeless quest to inform sprint that the tower was broken with no luck. I had reps tell me I had no signal, to arguing about how to even measure signal, to them just hanging up on me (and I was trying to be so nice and explain the scenario).

Finally, I went to my local sprint store. The guy brushed me off a few times, but was nice. Finally, I showed him that at the store my 4G worked fine but 2 miles away on a different tower it was broken... after telling him and showing him, he took interest.

He finally created some sort of report on the computer to send an engineer out to fix whatever the issue was. Two days later, the problem went away.

I still run into towers now and again that show that same behavior, but it's pretty rare. I would try driving a few towers over and confirm that it's a tower issue, then go from there.

Cliff notes:
Mine was a tower problem, went to sprint store, sprint store sent out an engineer, problem was fixed.

Very interesting. That might be my solution. I've been diddled by the Sprint 800 tech support for over THREE MONTHS NOW with still no repair (though the problem has changed parameters somewhat).

Perhaps the solution is as you say: F**k the 800 number and walk over to my nearest full-service Sprint store. So you got the store person to travel with you to your area so you could demonstrate the problem?

I have this same issue only at home. My EVO goes through the same process. I can usually get it to connect if I turn off 4g and then turn it back on several times. It does get frustrating. At my office, I always connect without issue. I have taken the path of waiting for the tower at home to be repaired rather than trying to deal with trying to call. Maybe I'll make a trip to the local store. They have always been very helpful.

So, I called tonight and was transferred to Tier 2 support quickly. They said they checked the towers in the area and did not show any problems. Then she had me enter ##3282# (data) and select the "reset data" option. I called while I couldn't connect. After I did this, I've been able to connect every time. I'm not convinced yet, but I will give it a couple days to see.

Well, 2 days after the 800# had me "reset data" on my Evo and all is well. I am able to connect every time I turn on 4G and the phone doesn't go through the connecting, optaining IP, disconnecting sequence. It may just be me, but it seems to connect in areas inside my place where it didn't used to connect. Connection is still solid at my office and seems to stay connected on my ride home as well. I'll post if anything changes.

I have the Same device, and the same problem. It's infuriating. I can't recognize a pattern to the madness, and the Sprint store wouldn't replace my device without the problem occuring in store while they are watching. Of course it didn't happen there.

Sometimes it stays connected at full bars for 4 hours or more, then suddenly and randomly disconnects without explanation. Other times it's every couple of minutes.

All I want to do is stream Netflix while I work (on computer documents, graphics, etc.). I can do this fine even with low 4g speeds of around 2 mbps...But disconnection problem makes the speed issue seem very minor.

For what it's worth, I too have been having random disconnects from my 4G regularly since January 7th (I started using the 4G in November).

The pattern is irregular but somewhat predictable. I'm getting disconnected, on average, every 62 hours, plus or minus 42 hours. I can usually reconnect immediately.

The problem started happening with the U600 modem. About 2 weeks ago they switched me to a U250 modem, but the pattern continues.

Every 62 hours? That would be un noticable fo most people, myself included. Every 62 minutes would piss off anybody. But even that would be preferable to what I get, which might be 62 seconds, or 4 minutes, or 6 minutes or 5 hours. There is no pattern and there is a problem.

Be that as it may, it's worse than my 3G experience, where, between 2009 and 2010, I NEVER had a dropped connection, not once.

Based on my own experience

(where I was getting similar, although not identical, experiences on the 3G network with one modem, then they switched me to a different model and the problem disappeared),

have you explored the possibility of not swapping out your modem for an identical model but, instead, swapping out your modem model for an entirely different modem model?
