 | [modem/router] Strange behavior on ActionTec M1424WR (vz FIOS) The router usually works, supporting Xbox, wireless & std. ethernet, with windows & linux, all fairly secure. I am getting behavior that looks like the router is compromised. When I log in to control/setup, the interface does not provide all buttons/objects on the home screen. Any attempt (for example, to alter wireless) to use a function "hangs" and drops session. I "solve" the problem by disconnecting from Internet for 10-15 minutes. Firewall is at medium and access for control is hardline in-house only. Logs don't show any recognizable weirdness; if "feels" like software rather than hardware. Anyone have any insights? |

If the problem still occurs after rebooting the router, try a hard reset of the router. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

 | (Sorry for delay - family emergency) Power cycling the router did not fix the problem without the waiting and/or disconnect outlined above; I have not yet done a hard reset/re-config because I was wondering if anyone had seen symptoms like this before. |

At this point, my first guess would be that the flash image is corrupt. However that wouldn't be the cause if disconnecting from the internet for 10-15 minutes solves the problem. That sounds more like a NAT table issue.
What revision of the Actiontec do you have?
Are you running any torrents, refreshing large server lists in Steam, or doing anything similar that could flood the NAT table?
I've seen posts where the Actiontec exhibits some weirdness, such as the inability to port forward, but have never seen a report of the pages losing buttons/objects. The solution to these has been to replace the router.
I have a few suggestions. •Try a factory reset.
•Go Advanced; Firmware Restore and restore the previous version.
•Call the FSC and have them send you a replacement router. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

 | After several power cycles and attempts to login (the router LAN lights in use would all go out and the Internet light would go orange, then the session would be expired), I was able to get to the advanced/firmware upgrade page and perform an upgrade (as opposed to a restore). However, as I write, the problem persists, sporadically. I have connection to the internet, but login to the router GUI can be weird and exhibit symptoms. No torrents. Have an xbox on a long wire (100ft) that I originally suspected, but it usually runs Netflix or Call of Duty. Problem occurs while it is not being used, though. That has been the case for at least a year.
So: I am now on 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.12.3 f/w, HW Rev. is A. |

The reason I suggested a restore instead of upgrade is that if you were already on the latest version, the router would just say "You're already on the latest version" and not load a different image.
The fact that the problem clears after 10-15 minutes still seems like a NAT table issue. The rev A was notorious for a very small NAT table. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »What is the NAT Table problem in the Actiontec?
I would still suggest calling and requesting a replacement router. You should get something newer than a rev. A, although I'm not familiar with Fairpoint's replacement policies. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.
