 | Fairpoint ending Line Sharing with GWI I got an email from the company stating such and I'd just like to know if anyone else has? |
|
 | It's true. They are ending it in Maine and New Hampshire |

1 edit | reply to buzz_4_20 Oh Joy, another way for Fairpoint to screw people over, Good Job FP, Good Job.
My advice, if you can, switch your phone to GWI, I use GWI for Phone and Internet for my home service, and both of my business lines. |
|
 | I'm hoping I can have GWI run a line, but my apartment building may not allow that. |
|
 | Depending on the size and age of the apartment building they usually have extra copper built in for expansion so you should be ok, and if you are just switching to GWI for your phone service as well as the internet you already have, they will not need to run a new physical line. |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 It is important to note that FairPoint shares its lines with GWI under a contract and will continue to provide line sharing as required by the contract. GWI has a contract for these services and that contract expires February 28, 2011. The company has offered to extend the contract, but ultimately it is GWIs choice whether or not it will renew its contract with FairPoint. |

The company has offered to extend the contract, but ultimately it is GWIs choice whether or not it will renew its contract with FairPoint. Fairpoint agreed to extend the contract for 60 days. We appreciate the extra time to move customers, but it doesn't change the underlying fact that line sharing is going away, just what month it goes away in. Fairpoint has consistently declined to renew the contract when we have repeatedly asked over the last six months. Obviously we can't wait until the last month to inform our customers as they need time to make an informed decision on what to do next.
Disclosure: I work for GWI |

 | Aren't you the Pres/CEO of GWI? Either way my suggestion still stands to the people doing line sharing, Ditch it and switch to GWI for both, The service is better,
When my GWI service went down a couple weeks ago we couldnt even get fairpoint out to check the lines, they just flat out lied about coming to check the line at the NID, but the GWI techs called me back constantly to let me know what was going on and give me updates... Fairpoint won't even return calls... |
|
 | reply to buzz_4_20 So does this mean that GWI will be running new lines to customers? And if so does this mean GWI will have it's own central office in my town? |
|
 | Don't I wish! I'd love to have the equipment out of the local Fairpoint CO |

|
 | Linesharing simply means being able to have different providers on the same pair of copper, For example having Fairpoint provide Phone and GWI Provide Internet on the same physical pair of copper.
From what I understand all this means is that you will not be able to have a combo of FP and GWI on the same line, if you wish to keep Fairpoint for Phone and GWI for Data, GWI will have to run a standalone line to carry their service. |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 My solution is simple... dropping my FairPoint voice service... |
|
 | Buzz, Thats what I did... for home and work. GWI now handles all my voice and internet. |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 i live in portsmouth, nh. i dont think i have received this notice, however, i do throw out lots of stuff that looks like junk mail! will i be affected by this? i have phone with fairpoint and internet with gwi. no way i am dropping gwi, they are great. if i have to, fairpoint goes and i either go cellphone ( i have never had one) or comcast (combine tv and phone) any info would be appreciated. |
|
 | Just talked to GWI....it's a big bait and switch. They won't carry phone service if you live in NH, so they have to run an extra line out to our apartment complex..oh yeah, and btw...you not only continue to pay Fairpoint their phone charges, but GWI says they can only offer the high speed line for flat rate of 49 bucks so....suddenly my combined bill for both has gone up!
They are inconveniencing us...the offer should be same service, and same price, combined. By changing it up like this, GWI is going to get a windfall for those who switch over. Be careful.... |
|
 | The hell with this. I just decided I'll go with Fairpoint or Comcast. GWI is not reducing price for NH customers, only increasing, by a substantial margin. They are the ones inconveniencing us, therefore, they should offer lower/equal rates and/or increased speeds, not the other way around, if they are going to ask us to jump through hoops to alter our service needs.
They say in the email that this is not a promotion or sales call, but a required service change notification. That's BS, because in fact, they are going to jack up your rate in NH if you are forced to go with them by putting in a new line. They won't give you the option of phone plus internet. You're forced to take their high end internet with a flat rate of 49 and change, with no cap on speed. That will be an increase of 15 more dollars per month, and I still have to pay Fairpoint for phone.
They'll tap around this subject on the phone, but you do the math. They are clever to slip this new increase on those of you in NH. Don't buy, and vote with your feet! |
|
 | actually, they have never been allowed to offer phone service in NH. i asked about that years ago, when i wanted to drop fairpoint when they first started here. some kind of regulatory rule. anyhow, i found out that i hopefully will be able to get a dedicated line in my building, and will be able to have twice the speed for only 10 bucks more per month. looks good to me. |

 | reply to jetjockey GWI is not the one who decided to end the line sharing agreement, Being able to share the line with FP reduces GWI's cost since they do not have to run a new line and maintain that line, since they are losing that, of course they are going to have to charge more.
If you are going to switch thats obviously your choice, and faced with a higher fee I might jump ship too, but don't blame GWI, as this is yet another Fairpoint Clusterfrig. (Oh and BTW, as a former Fairpoint customer, if you are going to switch, go with Comcast as Fairpoint will just make you want to tear out your eyeballs every time you have to deal with them) |
