Ethernet over Copper (Hatteras and Sonicwall TZ 180)

Try putting it back on Auto Negotiate; there is a lot of misinformation floating around about configuring gear for these circuits.

And, for the record, my understanding is that it is decidedly NOT Ethernet, despite what they are calling it. It's bonded DSL which is why you'll see overhead loss.

I have tried auto negotiate, the status shows it's 10 Mbps Half duplex and I still get 1 Mbps upload.

Are they still telling people, incorrectly, to use a crossover cable? If so, try a standard cable.

I believe I have tried it with a regular cable with 10 Mbps Full Duplex and it was the same result. If i try it with 100 Mbps Full Duplex, there is no link.

I tried to connect a Dlink router to it and since there are no link speed option, i'm assuming it's on auto? Somehow it's selecting 100 Mbps and i'm getting no connection with Dlink.

How is the Hatteras unit handing out ip addresses, if it is via dhcp you may need to reset the unit to get the new device to pull an ip or is it being done by static?

My SonicWall is assigned a static IP address. Again, when I have my laptop connected to the Hatteras, the speed is 5/5. but when it's connected to my SonicWall, it's 4/1! I can't figure it out!

I would contact sonic wall support, since this seems to be a problem with the tz180 you could setup a small machine with pfSense or m0n0wall that will do everything your sonic wall is running.

Have you tried disabling all non essential features in the tz180?
Are you connecting via wireless to the tz180 or via ethernet to the tz180 to your laptop?

Your deep packet inspection firewall Sonicwall TZ 180 may not have the processing power to handle the higher bandwidth (just a guess). Do you have another router/firwall to try on the connection?

I forgot to mention that the Hatteras equipment on your site can be configured to generate traffic towards you Sonicwall TZ 180. If the connection is 10Mbps/full, it can generate 10/Mbps of bandwidth toward you. If you can capture the rate on your side of the TZ, you might be able to tell if it is slowing things down in the downstream direction.

If it's a Hatteras box, it's probably LRE (long reach ethernet.) Ultimately, it doesn't matter... if you're paying for 5 and getting 5.

How was your laptop setup? (autoneg I'm assuming) How did it actually link? What are the published performance specs for the TZ 180?

Suggestion... put a switch between the hatteras and your test device. That will take the link negotiation out of the question. Then test with each. My guess is the firewall isn't fast enough.

I put a switch in the middle of the hatteras and the Sonicwall, with the SonicWall using Auto Nego and it's getting around 5/5!

I'm not sure if it's becuase I have a standard switch between the hatteras and Sonicwall, but the quality of service is not so good. During normal traffic, when I do a continuous ping to www.google.com, I would get a consistently timeout every 20 or so pings. The ping request time is usually ~10 ms which is good.

Additionally when I was downloading something remotely from the server (which is on the speakeasy line), it was destroying the download bandwidth for the speaskeasy line while the upload speed was around 2 meg.

If I was downloading something on speakeasy line, I should be using the upload bandwidth right but is it rendering the download speed to a point that it is unuseable. When this happens and I ping www.google.com, I would get one or two timeout every 10 pins and the response time goes up to 50 and 100 ms.

Any ideas? Speakeasy support is of no help.

I would change out the sonicwall, and go with a differnt type of router Maybe a Cisco or setup a old machine as a router/firewall.

I think this may be your issue.
