And it absolutely will not be free. It's just a question of how much they think people will be willing to pay. They would probably want to charge per device like they do with the cable boxes. This might work out to $ 2.00 for the AC, $2.00 for the dryer, $2.00 for the washer, $2.00 for the fridge, etc. The fees could well cost more than you could possibly save on your electric bill.
