Just dumped my cable service and in the process of making the switch to fiber. Anyone here familier with Bristol, VA Utilites Optinet? Ordered the telephone, tv, and high speed services. They have come out and installed a box along with a battery back up system which they had to pull the electic meter to install a small grey box under the meter which then feeds to another box. The fiber has been ran to the box and now awaiting for install tech to come into the house and finish everything up.
Not the best internet packages compared to other fiber services. EPB fiber gives you 50Mbps symmetrical for $70 vs Optinet's 30Mbps down/16Mbps up for $60 for example. But it does look like they have lowered prices recently. They claim to be the first munifiber triple play offerer. Small utility only serving 9500 may explain some of the higher costs.
reply to jmatherly4219 Yea they started building their fiber network back in 2000 I believe I was the first successful utlity company to deploy a telecommunications network, after jumping through all the legal stuff. There are about 22000 people leaving on the Bristol, VA side not all of them made the switch to fiber. Optinet is also deploying there fiber in other neigboring counties to give them access to fiber as well.
reply to jmatherly4219 Any chance you can take a picture of the boxes outside your house? I'm curious why they had to pull the meter? Is the UPS located outside your house, and connected to the meter? -- Fiber to the Home, gotta love it!
