do I need to attach it directly to san?

I have not too much idea on how SAN works but I know that storage devices must be accessible to the media server that catalogs and manages backups for clients (servers/workstations to be backed up). Can I access SAN through LAN? or does it only apply to NAS?

Does Symantec media server I identified need to be connected to storage array via fiber/iSCSI too like all servers I back up and restore? The media server kinda servers like an administrative console.

This may help you understand the terminology: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_area_network

It is possible your SAN can be accessed over a mapped network drive, just like a NAS, but you haven't provided any details on your SAN type/model/mfg.
