Need help port forwarding with my Speedstream 5100b.

Hello everyone.
I have a speedstream 5100b modem router hooked to a Linksys WRT300N. I currently subscribe to AT&T (use to be SBC) DSL service. I believe it is the "lite" version as the speeds are slow and as "affordable" (aka.cheap) as I can get.

My problem is I want to use a bit torrent client called bit comet and I would like to have a port open for "listening" but I am having trouble with creating a static IP/Port forwarding between the 5100b modem/router and my Linksys WRT300N.

The Linksys router has a web configurable interface and specifically a section that you can do single port forwarding or range forwarding, but there isn't an easy interface for this on the speedstream 5100b modem/router. It has a wen interface that looks like the following:

»AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »Funhouse 5100b Setup and Reference Info

I have several computers hooked to the Linksys WRT300N via wired and wireless connections.

I am not an experienced computer networker so I could really use the help in the simplest terms possible (e.g. Type this into your Subnet Mask for the Linksys router...) I understand the concepts of how things should work, but just don't have the nuts and bolts knowledge to put it to work.

I have included a technictions report from my speedstream 5100b router/modem below to help with the process. I aslo noted that the firm ware on it isn't the latest and greatest (should be 1.01.00.53 I think), but don't want to update it unless it is needed as I don't want to break my internet connection unless I have to. I don't have anothe way to get back to running if I cannot use my DSL connection.

I looked on the portforward.com web site for help, however the Speedstream 5100b router/modem web interface had a section that allowed for port forwarding which mine does not.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Steve

On the "Connection Information" page of the modem, what do you have specified for the "Mode"? Mine is "PPP on the modem (Public IP for LAN device)" and I don't have to do anything in the modem for port forwarding.

Thanks for the help

The selection called "PPP is on the modem", is what is selected.

Steve

Changing these settings may interfere with your ability to connect to the Internet.

PPP is on the modem. This is the normal mode for this modem when connected to a single computer. In this mode, the PPP session is initiated from the modem. Gateways and routers should work in this mode but their configuration may have to be changed to do so (e.g., you may need to have the gateway/router IP address changed to 192.168.1.1).

PPP is on the computer. This mode is normally used if you need to run a PPPoE client on your PC. This mode can be used with a gateway or router which initiates a PPPoE session. To return to the DSL modem user interface you will need to directly connect your PC to the modem without any gateway or router between the modem and the PC.

Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used). This mode must be used if you are connecting to a non-PPPoE network.

OK, since your modem is set up like mine, you shouldn't have to do anything. All ports are passed through to the router.

I use uTorrent and have a port (62682) forwarded to the machine where uTorrent runs specified in the router.

I also have my "main machine" (where uTorrent and my FTP server run) specified to the router in a "Static DHCP" entry. That way, it always gets the same IP address.

edit: That would be specified in your router at Setup->Advanced routing (Static routing section).

Do you have the speedstream 5100b modem/router too? Which type of router do you have hooked up to it? What OS are you using and do you have your router set for static IP? What is your static IP,Netmask, and gateway set for your router?

Thanks again
Steve

I have the 5100b, also. It's hooked to an AirLink101 ar430w router. I'm running XPHome/Pro/Win2K/Win98SE. (3 machines, one with multiple bootable partitions.)

The router's WAN is set to "Dynamic IP".

Do you have the standard "1 dynamic IP PPPoE" service from AT&T? If so, the IP tends to remain constant as long as you don't turn the modem off. Even then, if you reconnect in a short period of time (minute or less), you'll tend to get the same IP back.

The LAN side subnet mas is 255.255.255.0, so I can access the modem on 192.168.0.1 and the router at 192.168.1.1.

Thanks for the help. I have the same set up you have for the 1 dynamic IP PPPoE from AT&T, but for some reason bit comet keeps telling me that the listening port is blocked. Maybe I'll try utorrent. Thanks for the help. I'll head over to the bit comet forums.

Have you checked your system using grc.com's port checker?
