More Tariff filings from the other incumbents

Tariff filings, and also Commentaries regarding B#ELL's request to postpone the filing of some of their new tariffs which were originally reqested by the CRTC.

Most of that is in the next linked thread :

Top tech stories in 2011.

quote:
But in Canada, the biggest tech story of the year was the controversy over usage-based internet billing, as judged by viewers' interest on CBCNews.ca.

It was a drama that quickly ramped up from where it left off in 2010, when the CRTC ruled that Bell could impose usage-based caps on small internet providers.

Disclaimer: It is a silent victory for me to have my petition to GiC mentioned again and a pointer to the CBC article announcing my petition being part of the top tech stories of 2011.

A bit OT, but here are rumors with the "new" mobile companies.

>Globalive Communications Corp., a two-year-old Canadian wireless carrier, is in talks to buy Mobilicity, adding a competitor to take on larger rivals BCE Inc. (BCE) and Rogers Communications Inc., according to a person familiar with the discussions.

>Cairo-based Orascom completed a $6.5 billion merger with VimpelCom in April to create the world’s sixth-biggest mobile phone operator. Orascom began talks with Public Mobile, another new Canadian entrant, in late 2010 about merging with Globalive, a second person said.

So nothing official and only speculations...

Good article about Québécor and how Pelado pretends to not take political sides.

Some interesting things:

Brian Mulroney is on the Board.
Francoise Bertrand, a former CRTC chairman is chairman. (she is one who had publcly supported UBB)

The thick plottens !

No fuckin' kidding... I made it to the fifth line and quickly decided I didn't feel like thinking about this over the x-mas holidays.

B$ELL Screws Retail Subscribers Yet Again

This Just In : Shares of the company who makes Preparation 'H' rose sharply this morning on the news.

That's right, further incest at B$ELL.

As this article by DSLR Karl states, Bell's own retail customers get shafted once more :

»Bell Lowers Caps

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, Bell has never backed away from UBB, at least not insofar as their residential RETAIL market sector goes.

>A request from the Canadian Network Operators Consortium Inc. (CNOC), a trade group representing dozens of smaller ISPs, was filed Wednesday with regulatory authorities asking that a Nov. 15 decision allowing higher rates based on "capacity" be revisited, with an aim to lowering fees that smaller providers will have to start paying by Feb. 1.

Ott_Cable

@teksavvy.com
On jfmezei's link:

>Update: A spokesperson for CNOC clarified that a request for a price review is not part of the complaint filed Wednesday. Only requests about the new model’s implementation were made in the submission. CNOC is considering a formal request to address pricing, the person said.

That is not in my Montreal Gazette one.

Nowak's article is SUPOIB as usual.

The Gazette/FP piece is good, but has one info error : CRTC'S original UBB decision was EARLY last year, not LATE.

Geist's comprehensive multi-linked article says that it's not ALL bad, and he may well have a point there, the way he explained it.

It World's was decent too, though shorter, and concentrated more on CNOC's position and its complaints to CRTC.

Karl from DSLR has published a followup article where he compares the new and the revised service plans which TSI and eBox have just announced, to each other and to those of the incumbent providers such as Bell, and notes that there might be some competition restarting after all, up here in the 'Great White North'.

B$ELL is doing some of this too !

Also from Karl :

»Press Notices Other ISPs Impose 'Pay Your Bill Fees'

»Pay Verizon Wireless a Fee...To Pay Your Bill

»Sprint Starts Charging $2 For Paper Bill

I read something a day or two ago on Bell's site, in Residential Internet in the fine print, IIRC, about paper statements costing $2.
