OT: MPs want tax deductions on valid business expense: golfing

»news.nationalpost.com/20 ··· golfing/

>NDP MP Peter Stoffer, who assembled the caucus, said a lot has changed since 1972, when tax write-offs for golf-related expenses were scrapped. Driving, chipping and putting is not only for corporate fat cats anymore, he said, now that more than six million Canadians play golf — even more than play hockey.

That should keep the incumbents happy.

Allowing golfing expenses to be tax deductible would leave a paper trail of such golfing activities and that is the last thing one would want.

There is no paper trail of the golfing I did last Tuesday in a snow storm at a local Tim Hortons. We both paid cash and the amounts are small enough that no expense report needed to be filed.

Yes, but there's the surveillance video at the cashier.

Note to JF....... never break tradecraft.
Always use code names, dead drops, and brush passes.
Never wear your riding shorts to a meeting.
And don't forget the Groucho glasses next time.

I bought my Tim Hortons stuff well before the other person arrived, so that video wouldn't have record of us being together

>Never wear your riding shorts to a meeting.

I was in a suit which was the funny part because the other person didn't believe I had ridden my bike in the snow. Elastic bands at ankles kept the dress pants from getting caught in the chain... but the bottoms were a bit wet due to snow

If I had arrived in a limo, it may have projected an image that I was getting bribed by incumbents or worse, indie ISPs and that would not have helped my cause.

I won't comment on the actual job losses. But I will comment on the newpaper article. I think that it was very low and unprofessional for the ISP's PR person to blame the layoffs on the CRTC.

Considering that other ISPs are thriving with the new rates and hiring more staff, it isn't the new rates that are causing this.

I have not followed who hired whom at the ISP I can't name. But I note the liberal misuse of the word bandwidth.

How can they give unlimited bandwidth between 02:00 and 08:00 ? If you are on ADSL1 profile, they can't raise your speed to "unlimited". And I doubt TPIA ISPs have the power to remove any speed liit on their customer's modems (aka: speed boost).

It is saddening to see some ISPs who should know better misuse the term "bandwidth".

Bandwidth can mean many things to many people.

As corruptions of the language become common place they become accepted as normal usage and make it into advertising and eventually yer big dictioneries.

They misused that term liberally over 3 years back, before I first offered them my customership.

Any person(s) recently hired/fired there may or may not be to blame, though their newly published FAQ offers many more opportunities to state it correctly - or otherwise as is frequently still the case.

TWO other IISPs have each promised me, in public posts in this forum over the past few days, to tidy up their terminology in that regard, as part of their website updates for their revised rate pages.

I sincerely DO plan to let them know how well they have done (or not) in that regard.

CNOC Questions Rate Spread for Service Charges

Fresh Today !

Several of the incumbent providers have published very different rates for certain service charges to the wholesale or Independent ISPs, just as their costs quoted to the CRTC for CBB (Capacity-Based Billing) increments of 100Mb themselves vary quite widely.

Thanks for tip to Merovingian, & andyb.

Re: CNOC Questions Cablecos' Rates' Spread for CBB

On the Monday releases, the CRTC had an interesting report on new media.

It is dated September 2011, so not sure why it would have only been released today.

Have begun to read it.

For the record, the infamous "Policy Direction" can be found n the formal web site.

»laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/ ··· ext.html

(there used to be a copy on the Industry Canada web site part of a press release, as well as in the Canada Gazette to signify the order had been submitted, but the one at the above is what is actually in force.)

Cablecos' R&V of 2011-703

On Feb 3rd, 2012, I posted to the current thread about a CRTC R&V process initiated by Shaw Cable, regarding CRTC Decison 2011-703.

In the meantime, other Cablecos have added their input, and JF has had his thread renamed to reflect this change, to :
»Cable companies' Review and Vary of 2011-703

THIS post's purpose is to REVISE my now-locked post (mentioned above) in the same manner.

Below are the updated resources which are now available :

Easier to Find FORUMS for more ISPs

A few days ago, a few of us here, working with two of the well-known DSLR moderators, combined efforts to make existing DSLR forums for smaller Canadian ISPs (aka ad-hoc forums) more easy to FIND by folks who come to THIS forum.

The below-linked thread explains what happened and how it now works :

»Forums (Ad-Hoc) for more Canadian ISPs

Please check out on the main CBB forum page, just above the topic bar, where the new links follow the question :

Videotron files R&V of 2011-703

said by jfmezei:

Not a big surprise...

Videotron has just filed a review and vary of 2011-703.

I guess Cogeco is next.

Hopefully the CRTC will combine all of them into a single file.
