CNOC Questions Rate Spread for Service Charges

Fresh Today !

Several of the incumbent providers have published very different rates for certain service charges to the wholesale or Independent ISPs, just as their costs quoted to the CRTC for CBB (Capacity-Based Billing) increments of 100Mb themselves vary quite widely.

Thanks for tip to Merovingian, & andyb.

My early comments on it are HERE :

Re: CNOC Questions Cablecos' Rates' Spread for CBB

On the Monday releases, the CRTC had an interesting report on new media.

It is dated September 2011, so not sure why it would have only been released today.

»www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/publi ··· 0929.htm

Have begun to read it.

For the record, the infamous "Policy Direction" can be found n the formal web site.

»laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/ ··· ext.html

(there used to be a copy on the Industry Canada web site part of a press release, as well as in the Canada Gazette to signify the order had been submitted, but the one at the above is what is actually in force.)

Cablecos' R&V of 2011-703

On Feb 3rd, 2012, I posted to the current thread about a CRTC R&V process initiated by Shaw Cable, regarding CRTC Decison 2011-703.

In the meantime, other Cablecos have added their input, and JF has had his thread renamed to reflect this change, to :
»Cable companies' Review and Vary of 2011-703

THIS post's purpose is to REVISE my now-locked post (mentioned above) in the same manner.

Below are the updated resources which are now available :

Easier to Find FORUMS for more ISPs

A few days ago, a few of us here, working with two of the well-known DSLR moderators, combined efforts to make existing DSLR forums for smaller Canadian ISPs (aka ad-hoc forums) more easy to FIND by folks who come to THIS forum.

The below-linked thread explains what happened and how it now works :

»Forums (Ad-Hoc) for more Canadian ISPs

Please check out on the main CBB forum page, just above the topic bar, where the new links follow the question :

"Looking for an ISP not listed ?"

Videotron files R&V of 2011-703

said by jfmezei:

Not a big surprise...

Videotron has just filed a review and vary of 2011-703.

I guess Cogeco is next.

Hopefully the CRTC will combine all of them into a single file.

Acanac Announces New DSL Prices for 2012

»acanac.ca/DSL.html

AFAIK, the DSL prices are new as of this week.

There seem to be 6Mb, 12Mb and 16Mb plans so far, and as I understand it, a 25/7 plan will be offered ONLY if and after they work out the VDSL modem issues with Bell.

They also show a link for Cable, and seem to have something each for Ontario and for Quebec subscribers.

»acanac.ca/cable.html

I am not sure how new the Cable prices are.

AHEM : Unfortunately, they have not eliminated the term 'BANDWIDTH' from their rate page charts, and wherever they use it, they still use it incorrectly.

The last word to me from Mister Acanac Inc »Re: Velcom, Acanac, price change, when ? (2nd post from bottom) was that they were going to clean up their technical terminology when they published these new rate pages.

So far no cleanup....

In comparison, Electronic Box has almost completely removed the term 'Bandwidth' from their ENGLISH rate pages, though their French ones seem to have some issues yet.

And the IISP with the hard to pronounce name has if anything gotten WORSE in regard to what they call things on THEIR rate pages.

These are for Ontario (Rogers) cable :

»Re: Velcom, Acanac, price change, when ?

Applicable only in areas where they have TPIA with Rogers.

Not sure whether Acanac website is updated yet.

Updated Quebec cable rates coming very soon, they say.

EDIT :

That Pesky $8 Modem Rental Fee

More than once, someone or other has asked WHERE in the CRTC tariffs and decisions that Bell was allowed to charge this $8 monthly rental fee to the IISPs (and hence their respective customers), if they chose VDSL service such as 25/7 speed tier.

And today, an answer has finally surfaced :

»[Official] $8 Rental and Some Answers

BTW, that thread is currently at the TOP of the DSLR Hot Topics list.

The answer to that $8 question can be found right in this forum when back around July, 2010, both Bell and Telus said to the CRTC at the oral hearings that a "customer service apocalypse" (that is actual the words they used) would follow if they couldn't lock people in to their locked-out modems.

$8 is what bell charges ISPs. And at the moment, there is no way for ISPs or individuals to own the modems. But this is something being looked at.

TSI New QC CABLE Plans & Prices

These, unofficially, are the new long-awaited numbers for Quebec :

»New Quebec Cable Rates - As of March 13, 2012

»Re: New DSL and CABLE price comparison Quebec starting february

The TSI website seems to be already updated with these, so I guess it's official.

Most rates have been reduced, and/or caps increased.

Someone else started the thread in the TSI forum, but Marc has posted there too.

And it's simple to remember.

Everything is either 300GB monthly usage cap or Unlimited monthly usage.

[SPREADSHEET of Prices & Plans of Ontario IISPs]

This comparison sheet is mainly intended to cover Cable TPIA Indies, but I have included incumbents Rogers' & Cogeco's latest non-bundled, non-contracted, non-promo'd residential rates and speeds, plus the plans of a few of the better known DSL Indies, to aid quick and easy comparison by shoppers.

The new TPIA rate structure has enabled product/service differentiation and innovations such as reduced speeds or unlimited usage off-peak. So I welcome any ISP, even those whose name I can't pronouce making new product offerings which are different from the rest.

How's that for a neutral answer ?
