I thought they cut out provincial funding for rubber rooms and just let ppl go to jail now? Isn't that the crime and punishment "agenda" these days?

»Canadian Caps Aren't Economically Justified
quote:
"You'll recall that when Time Warner Cable tried to impose low caps and high per gigabyte overages here in the States, they proclaimed the move was financially necessary because flat-rate broadband pricing wasn't sustainable.

Consumer backlash to the idea of over-paying by the byte forced Time Warner Cable to back off the plan, and they've reported several consecutive quarters of healthy profit under that supposedly unsustainable flat-rate pricing model."

»www.theglobeandmail.com/ ··· 1890567/
quote:
The campaign also got a jolt of legitimacy from a formal, 27-page petition filed to cabinet by a lone computer consultant in Montreal.

Jean-François Mezei, who runs Vaxination Informatique, stayed up late last Wednesday finishing a type of document more commonly filed by the lawyers and regulatory experts of large telecom companies like Bell and Telus.

Mr. Mezei first got involved in 2008 at a protest against carriers being allowed to “throttle,” or squeeze, their networks to control network congestion.

“This process has taken me now from a being a protester on Parliament Hill to successfully handing a petition to the governor in council. And it looks like the minister has gotten the hint that this needs to reversed,” Mr. Mezei said.

He said he called Industry Canada on Tuesday and the bureaucrat answering the phone said that in 10 years at Industry he had never seen a document filed by an individual go so high.

“My petition was an enabler of this, rather than the cause. But it still feels good to feel like you’re part of something big.”

And What IS a FAIR PRICE for INTERNET ?

Only yesterday, The Globe and Mail has also offered opinions about just that :

»www.theglobeandmail.com/ ··· 1890596/
quote:
"Rather than ensuring consumers receive fair Internet pricing, the CRTC seems content to line the pockets of Cable and telecommunications companies by forcing Canadian consumers to pay Internet data rates that have no basis in reality."

GREEN Party Finally Comments

.
»greenparty.ca/media-rele ··· decision
quote:
The Green Party of Canada urges the Minister of Industry to reverse the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) January 25th decision, and to fully review all related rulings.

The CRTC's decision abandoned Canadians in favour of big business by allowing large Canadian ISPs to charge gross overage fees.

By limiting the pricing options of smaller ISPs using their network, the CRTC has effectively crippled small businesses who provide valuable Internet services to thousands of Canadians.

quote:
The Green Party supports the principle of Fair Usage Based Billing (FUBB) for Internet services.

Because bandwidth is limitedproviders should be allowed to charge more to consumers who use more.

If implemented correctly, FUBB would provide improved Internet access to Canadians by giving ISPs a way to curb the consumption of the very few who consume at the highest levels.

UBB Be Gone ?

.
The Below Group of Articles/Threads covers from Feb 2nd to 3rd.

Globe and Mail - SEE ABOVE POST from FATNESS.

Next are 3 DSLR forum threads :

»CRTC ruling is about to be killed (looking official)

»Ottawa to quash CRTC decision killing unlimited Internet

»Tony Clement: UBB will be overturned

Gov't Expects CRTC to Reverse Ruling on Internet Billing - UBB - CTV - Web story, with a Video clip

[The typed version is missing a COMMA (which should be after the word 'illusion'), without which it dramatically changes the meaning of the 2nd paragraph to seem to contradict the accepted quote. - The Gazette version, below, is better composed.]

»www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Polit ··· -110202/

The full CTV TV coverage begins at about 8:20 into this next clip :

(Note that in there, the CRTC is blamed rather than Bell, for UBB)

»watch.ctv.ca/news/ctv-na ··· ip411995

The story seems to have broken too late for CBC's 'The National' TV broadcast, which is produced to first air at 9 PM EST on the CBC News Channel, rather than CTV's National News which airs at 11 PM EST.

Next is CBC's web edition of the story, which is more neutral (it clearly blames Bell for UBB) than CTV's (who OWNs Bell) coverage.

OTTAWA — The Harper government will overrule a recent decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission that effectively kills unlimited Internet-pricing packages — unless the telecommunications regulator backs down first, Postmedia News has learned.

"The CRTC should be under no illusion. The prime minister and the minister of industry will reverse this decision unless the CRTC does it itself," a senior government source, speaking only on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday evening.
