looking for corded phone compatible with comcast phone

i just got the bundle with the comcast phone service.
i'm looking for a corded phone with caller id etc. getting rid of all wireless technology.
do i need a phone with answering machine capabilities or can i just use the comcast voicemail? do most new phones notify you when there's a message?
my cordless uniden phone doesn't notify me.

thanks..

Why not just use any existing corded phone and a separate CID device? If that is not an option, you may want to contemplate for a trimline phone with CID. I have a cheap (not good quality) trimline corded phone with CID capability made by Sakkar (FCC Reg.#: GXACHN-25749-TE-E) that I bought long time ago (free after a $10 rebate).

Regarding voicemail, yes, you can use Comcast's voice mail instead of an answering machine. It will even take a message while you're using your phone, which a regular answering machine cannot.

As for notification, *most* providers will do two things: Send a signal that lights a "message waiting" indicator on your phone, and will cause your phone's dial tone to stutter for a few seconds after you lift the handset.

To get the first to work you need a phone that supports that signal. The second method is phone independent but necessitates your picking up the phone and listening for a few seconds each time you want to know if there's a message waiting.

BTW, I don't know which method(s) Comcast DV supports, I don't use that service. You should be able to find out with a quick call, though.

I don't think so, I looked at the manual and didn't see anything about message waiting.

The VTech DECT wireless phones we use at home support the message waiting indicator function supplied by Callcentric via my phone ATA. It *does* have a built in answering machine (that we've switched off) and I imagine that most analog phones with a message waiting indicator also have a built-in answering machine. But, even with the answering machine function turned off, the indicator still works with the provider's voice mail.

Hold the phone!

This phone looks like it will work:

Edit: Oops, that's cordless. Any reason you need a corded phone?

@comcast.net

need a corded phone b/c i've been talking with a scientist who's spent years researching harmful effects of dirty electricity and wireless technologies. he's convinced me to wire everything.

sorry i'm stupid when it comes to this stuff but is the comcast phone in the bundle considered voip?

Yes, it's voip "enough" to fit this category.

Anyway, this one will work: »www.amazon.com/AT-993-Corded-2-L···8&sr=8-5

It's a two line phone, more than you need, but it has what you want.

thanks gary....thought maybe the one you listed might be too old when i first saw it. came out in 2001.

i was actually looking at this 2-line new model »www.amazon.com/AT-T-2-Line-Speak···d_cp_e_3

but, thought maybe i could get by with something a little simpler/cheaper.

That one will work too, according to the manual page 27 at »www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=w···&cad=rja

It's indicator is on the LCD screen, a bit less in-your-face than a blinking LED but it ought to work fine.

maldo

@comcast.net

hey gary,
i just read with the one you listed that the light shows when there has been a call, but not when there is a voice mail. is that what your information indicates?
i'm just comparing the 2.
thanks for the help

According to the manual page 52 (second paragraph) it does. »www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=w···&cad=rja

@comcast.net

one other question.
i only have the one line from comcast. is it possible to add a google voice number to the voip as the 2nd line somehow?

I am glad to hear the remarks from such a scientist.

"Dirty Electricity" tells the story of Dr. Samuel Milham, the scientist who first alerted the world about the frightening link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic pollution, and human disease. Milham takes readers through his early years and education, following the twisting path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century diseases of civilization, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and suicide, are caused by electromagnetic field exposure.

Dr. Milham warns that because of the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-max systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality. In Dirty Electricity, he reveals the steps we must take, personally and as a society, to coexist with this marvelous but dangerous technology.

Now, I don't believe most of that myself, but it is important to keep up with electricity news. After all, it is "current events".

Nice pun! Of course if all serial killers drank water would water be the cause of their behaviour?

Truthfully, as an Avionics Tech of 23 years, I deal with RF in the hundreds and in some cases thousands of watts radiating from an antenna usually within a hundred feet of me. I know of one case 20 years ago where someone was working next to an HF antenna on the side of the tail of our C-17 and the radio was energized and being transmitted upon. He got a mild skin burn. Safe distances related to gain and radiation pattern were established ages ago and even then they are very conservative to account for humans slightly violating them. To give an example of how powerful the HF radio is on an aircraft, the actual amplification is done in what is called an antenna coupler right at the antenna. This coupler is sealed and pressurized, otherwise at altitude, it would arc and sparc due to the thinner air. My other mega source of RF is SatCom but those antennas radiate skyward from two antennas on top of the wings and one on top of the fuselage. Before I commission Satcom, I always make sure no one is working anywhere near the antennas. Weather Radar even being microwave is probably my weakest system at 500mw or less but feeding a high gain slotted waveguide antenna. As little as 5 feet is safe but we use 12 feet conservatively. I had one flight test tech declare that one could sit on the radar antenna and your private parts wouldn't even tingle. Not sure I want to know how he arrived at that.

Our rates of cancer or any other ailments in my profession are no different than elsewhere unless someone improperly used cleaning chemicals but that's another subject entirely and usually organ degradation/failure is the outcome. The biggest factor in developing illnesses is simply living longer. Not too far back in history, the average life expectancy was 35 so you didn't see much of what you see today as the odds of developing some diseases under the age of 35 were minimal and when the diseases did occur, they weren't named yet.

Strong EMF readings (not RF in any way shape or form) which can easily be measured in the concerned area have been known to give some people a creepy feeling like they are being watched by an invisible entity or something is present that really isn't. Poor house wiring can cause this. You have a far greater chance of being done in by Radon gas in the home than any man made consumer device you can introduce to said home except a chainsaw(I still can't believe the Texas Massacurist only used a McCullough 210). Then we must consider that cosmic radiation from all over the cosmos, even in the dead of night bombard us with far more energy. In fact some inexplicable unduplicatable electronic malfunctions of equipment are thought to be caused by cosmic radiation. Neutrinos can penetrate 1 billion miles thick of lead.

I would really need to see actual microscopic evidence of tissue damage from such pathetically weak forms of rf such as anything you can legally use in the home versus an exact duplicate of the same tissue not having been exposed. You'd need identical clones to make such a study meaninful.

It's really discouraging to see people who have little or no understanding of RF and tissue absorption take it upon themselves to "do something about it". I've seen poor attempts at shielding, ones so bad and ineffective that I just don't have the heart to tell such people just how flawed their method is.

maldo

@comcast.net

the issues are much more than just cancer and tissue damage.
has to do with interference of electrical impulses in the heart and brain.

from my experience of living in a converted warehouse refrigerator with transformers mounted on the outer wall for 7 years and then living in an unpowered camper trailer i can say that emf pollution is a significant factor in quality of life.
