Re: Tweak Test

• Are you using your HOSTS file to block any programs/ports.

• Uninstall Java and download the latest version of Java from Sun. Even if the one you have is the latest one.

• Add the two ports in the Firewall to allow them to pass through the firewall.

»support.microsoft.com/kb/308127

or Change Firefox/IE to allow any port in and out

The only entry in the HOSTS file is 127.0.0.1 localhost, so nothing blocked there.

I added the two ports to both LAN and Internet Connection in My Network Places. Still only opening 8086.

As far as Firefox and IE, I don't see anywhere where I can allow or block ports, unless there are certain files that are editable. Are there? Or maybe something in the registry?

ZA's help indicates an option to allow certain ports, but that option is unavailable to me. It's possible that that option is only available with the paid software, even though the help file doesn't say so. If that's the case, I'm probably SOL until I can afford to get the paid version, which shouldn't be much longer.

So that's where everything stands now. I'll keep chipping away at this. If it turns out that I'm the only one with this problem, then I guess I'll just have to live with that.

• Take a look at your netstat -b. Avast! is running which might be blocking the port.

• Also on the port 8086, it shows Java is running the port. That should be IE/Firefox. I am guessing that is because the Tweak Test is hanging and it is not getting to your browser.

• Let's try this. Open a Command Prompt as a Administer

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:
netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults.
netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the box.

• This will show you how to allow a program/port through the Windows Firewall.

• Remember to allow a program/port through any blocking program. Avast!, Norton, etc. Or disable them so they will not start at boot.

I've looked at your post from the begining . I might suggest this site it has very valuable information. I would like you to download "Port checker" . when using this free program if the port is not open at the windows end of thing it will ask if you want it opened which in your case you will want it opened . after that if your not sure on how to go about opening the ports on your modem or router the site has a listing of all modems and routers just look up yours it will explain how to open ports on your specific equipment.Open your ports then go back and use port checker again, and it well make sure all is open and good i hope this helps you.

Opening ports for the first time was hell for me but not anymore this site helped me a lot.

• I seen that site while trying to help her. That Port Checker program will not install on my box (Win7) freezes on the install.

• We already know that the two ports are not open using a program above »www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/. There is nada in the MODEM which controls opening and closing ports. There are MODEM/Router units which are in one box, but there are still no port stuff on the MODEM side.

• Using the netstat commands show that only port 8086 opens when using the Tweak Tester.

• She gets the same result with or without the router. So that tells me that port forwarding is not the problem. I am not forwarding any ports in my router.

• Problem is that IE/Firefox is not opening port 8085. It could be blocked by the various programs that are running. In my Firewall rules IE is allowed in and out to use all ports (UDP and TCP). That is her problem.

Im using windows 7 ultimate I dont have any problem, when using it it will ask me to allow access

My personal setup is i only use Microsoft security essentials (for antivirus and malware) i also use peerblocker . In my case peerblocker will block me either alltogether or some of the functions of a web page like on this site i basicly have to turn it off before posting here.

if she could do a pc audit using belarc adviser (»www.belarc.com/free_download.html)
she could do a screen shot of just the programs she has loaded
might be a program in there that we might be aware of but cant think off the top of our heads .

It's fixed!

It had to do with settings in the Java console. Here's what I did:

When the tweak tester page came up, the Java icon appeared in the system tray. I right-clicked on the icon and selected "Open Control Panel". From the "General" tab under "Network Settings" I clicked the button which opened a window for proxy settings. Originally, "Direct Connection" was selected. I changed it to "Use Browser Settings". I ran the tweak test and it operated as it was supposed to.

I initially ran the test with Avast's shields turned off and Zone Alarm's firewall settings turned to off (for some reason, I can't uncheck the box that makes ZA start at boot). I then ran the test with all my security programs running as usual, and the tweak tester again operated as it should.

Thank you, Irish Shark and Jawjacker, for all your advice and troubleshooting!

BTW, I downloaded Belarc Advisor and it froze on install, so I wasn't able to use it.

Again, thank y'all so much!

That's good news!

When you ran the test, did the spinning Java logo popup? You did not get a prompt that says need to install Java (or something like that)?

Did you uninstall Java and reinstall the latest version as mentioned above?

Static Java logo on my machine, but same process.

I didn't uninstall/reinstall Java, but firefox did download the latest Java console add-on yesterday, so that could be it.

What prompted me to even look there was your comment that java.exe was accessing the tweak tester instead of firefox.

In the netstat -n results, port 8086 was the only one listed, but netstat -b showed that both 8085 and 8086 opened.

So, checking Java settings is another troubleshooting option.

Thanks again for all the help.
