[Serious] Empty nextdoor house + frost damage + a lesson

We've got a semi-detached house.
The house we are attached to has been rented but became vacant about 6 months ago.

I wrongly assumed that they would take precautions against winter weather.

As of yesterday I could hear the sound of rushing water through the neighbours wall.

Quick look through their window water all over the floor and the sound of a tap on full.
Google the landlord, phone the emergency repair line at 17.00gmt, amazingly got through to human who I could understand.
I phoned again 15mins later with further info.
They said they will call back.

No call by 21.00, I ring them, they said left message on my mobile,
funny I've had my mobile with me all the time no messages on tho!
Repeat conversation again but added approx flow rate (our supply is 9/10 litres a min)
x 12hrs since I first heard water = apprx 6400 litres.

They said they doubt very much anyone would be out tonight,
it will be tomorrow now.

Now its Monday,
(another possible 6,000+litres)
ok nothing happening so phone them again 12.00gmt,
repeat conversation again, they will contact the surveyor he will call you on your mobile, re-quote mobile no twice just in case they took it down wrong 1st time.

15.00hrs I ring them yet again, repeat conversation yet again this time play recording of sound of water as taken from outside!
Operator says 'I've never heard a leak as bad as that before'

Finally, a house in Northampton,
owned by a organisation in Leicester, (40 miles north)
sends in the repair man from Nottingham, (+30 miles further north still)
to turn the stopcock off at 17.00hrs

Next time I'll just kick the door down and diy!
