1 edit | Windows 7 MTU I know there's no tweaking on Vista or 7. But I have a peculiar issue with this new Windows 7 Home Premium PC from HP.
The default MTU is set to 1504. I researched how to change it, but before I do wanted to understand why it set itself to that out of the box from HP.
I have been seeing a small number, less than .003% of errors under WAN statistics (I have a wired only router no radio).
Anyone know any reason for this and safe to force the MTU to 1500? I am on cable not DSL. -- Live for today.... |

Since you did not say where you got the 1504 from, I cannot answer that.
To see what MTU Win 7 is really set to, do this. Open a Command Prompt as an administrator and run this
netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
That is what the real MTU is.
This is what I show after setting the MTU to 1500.
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
MTU MediaSenseState Bytes In Bytes Out Interface ------ --------------- --------- --------- ------------- 4294967295 1 0 7347 Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 1500 1 17886232 1941027 Local Area Connection

| Hey I only use netsh also. For mine it shows 1504 where yours has 1500. I have a Vista Home PC too that shows 1500 so the extra 4 surprised me. Just for grins I reinstalled the HP recovery CD and it is still 1504.
Been wondering if this could be the source of the WAN errors on the packet statistics. Being a hard wired network I've never seen anything but 0's in all LAN/WAN router dropped/error fields.

What I am showing is the MTU AFTER I set it to 1500.
Are you saying that you get 1504 AFTER you set the MTU or BEFORE you set the MTU? -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

drshock join:2000-08-19 Wake Forest, NC | Before, and I didn't want to force it to 1500 without knowing why it was set to 1504 out of the box. I've had several Vista boxes and they all were 1500 out of the box. -- Live for today.... |
