 | [TW] Problem connecting to the internet Hi All,
I had earthlink cable (via TW) installed yesterday. The technician didn't really seem to know what he was doing and was unable to configure my computer to connect to the internet.
The modem is plugged in to the cable line and all lights (except messages) are green - leading me to believe the modem has established a connection to the internet. I will be using a wireless router but given my problems for the time being I'm plugged directly into the modem.
The technician set up a connection on my computer which prompts me for my username/password. I enter it and I get an error message saying it could not connect me to the internet. I click the diagnose button and nothing happens. Also, my LAN Connection reads "unidentified network" when I'm wired in.
Basically what I'm wondering is how to set this up. Right now everything is set up to auto detec and presumably, earthlink has not assigned me a Static IP. Even if they did I believe it would identify it if everything was left in "let my computer ...".
Does anybody have EL TW that could detail how they are connected?
After waiting 1 month for Verizon to finally come and install a line in my apartment, and going another month without a modem from Verizon, I cancelled my service and gave earthlink a call - I was hoping things would go more smoothly than this as I have spent 2+ months in my apartment without internet now and cannot continue to take time off from work to sit around and wait for technicians.
Any help would be much appreciated!! |

Mark910Premium join:2002-04-21 Dayton, OH | The first thing you should try is to turn off (unplug) modem and computer. Then restart modem ,then computer. Wait until both are stabilized. Check connection status and report back. What operating system are you using? Are you connecting through a NIC or USB ? Welcome to dslreports. Register as a member. | OS is Vista, and connecting through a NIC. I've been bumming wireless internet off my neighbors for the past 2 months and that has worked fine.
Not even sure if I've used a hardline on this computer before. I can connect wirelessly to my router when I try plugging that into the modem, but again it says there is no internet. I set it up to login using my username/password and it still can't establish a connection. All the IP/DNS settings are set to default - just like my connections on my laptop.
I'm at work now but will try the following when I'm home. I think I did this yesterday and it didn't work but will give it a shot again in that order. |
