[speed/latency] Users With Slow Download Speed - Report In

Trying to compile a list of users with intermittent downloads speed problems. Seems this is a really common problem lately, mostly in the North East US?

Please keep this thread to only the following:

Users with intermittent download speed degradation.

Provide the following info:
City, State, Zip Code, Area Code, 3 digit phone prefix, modem model.
Note how long the problem has occurred, if the problem is intermittent or if the problem is consistent during a specific time of day, give a time of day the problem occurs, example 3-7 pm.

I cannot guarantee I can help out, however, I am working on getting some of this into to some higher levels inside Verizon to look at this disturbing trend that is impacting many of the DSL subscribers since late Fall of 2010.

Again, please keep this thread on topic, with just the above details, as hopefully we will start see specific trends and areas that are having problems.

I will start with a circuit I have had problems with, may be fixed at this point, but will use if for the sake of an example.

#7 Gansevoort, NY 12381, 518 793 westell 6100 line runs full speed (3360/832) from ~7am-~5pm, after 5 till the next morning it is nothing but timeouts and basically 0-.05kbs web pages keep "spinning" but never finish loading. Has been happening since around the last week of Dec.

#8 next door neighbor 518 792 is seeing the same thing.

#9 neighbor 1 street over 518 792 is seeing the same thing.

I'm sure everyone on the RDSLAM at the local stewarts shop is seeing the same thing.

i am actually having massive ping issue in

NY, 11372, Jackson Heights, 917 area code. Westell 6100G

My download is fine around 6.0mbps, upload is like 500kbps (should be 7xx kbps) when doing speed test to nearby East Coast servers.

But when I try to speed test or play games on servers in the West Coast my ping is really high like 200ms (which is usually 110-120ms before...). Download stays the same round 5-6mbps, but upload drops to 200ish kbps trying to connect to West Coast server...

I think it's actually an internal problem with Verizon in the NE Coast...

Had a problem (e.g. slow download/upload speeds, long ping times), here on Boston's Northshore, for a week, about a month back.

When I did a trace, found first 3 hops , all within the Verizon network to be fast. The delays were in handing off to the backbone.

Because the Verizon speed test showed I was getting the specified service speed, tech support said the problem wasn't theirs.

OK.....I understand backbone net congestion/delays, but the huge bottle neck was always in getting out of their network.

Whose problem is this?

Every day from 8 pm until midnight about 1700 down up OK; this with two different speed plans. I had G.DMT, 3360/864 modem to DSLAM, and upgraded to ADSL2+, 10641/943 modem to DSLAM, the connection is rock solid BTW.

My Verizon G4 also has slow download during those times so Verizon is throttling at times for some reason. I wonder if this has anything to do with the new iPhone coming on line?

Edit: right on time.

began noticing problems about 30 days ago and it is increasing in intensity and duration and night time (until 3 am) seems to be the worst. This past week my speeds are half as strong which is really bad considering I can only ever get 1.5 mbps max from my 3mbps subscription anyway.

#14 WNY, NJ 07093 (201) 854-xxxx, Westell 6100. Started to show intermittent problems during mid January 2011. Never had problems before.

When accessing modem config, the reported speed is 32Kbps dwn/ 160Kbps up. I am on the 768/128 "econo" plan. I was able to "fix" the problem by rebooting the modem either by power-on or through config screen. I usually keep my hardware powered down when not in use, therefore it usually took me 2 power-ups/reboots on the Westell to achieve the proper speed. Today though, it seems I am not able to achieve the normal speeds using the reboots.

You have a local loop problem. Open a new topic and post your modem stats.

Slow speed from 6pm-11pm at least 2 months

Working on the direct forum for the past month, have had a tech at my house and still nothing. It's funny, they had the wrong address and name on the account so my confidence in Verizon to actually fix this issue is not high. I'll give them another week or so and then I'll cancel. I can get 12Mbps with Charter for $34.99 versus the 49.99 I'm paying verizon to give me 2Mbps or less during the slow times.

If they sent a tech out I would hope that they saw a problem on your local loop.

It is quite obvious that the slow speed during prime time is a man made condition and not something occurring naturally in the network. The speeds do not slowly change as more people would start watching Netflux but they change abruptly at the same time every week day. They change earlier during week ends and holidays; that tells me this is network management and not a natural sticky tube occurrence.

What do the people in the Verizon direct support forum have to say? It is surprisingly quite from those that should know.

Gordon, PA, 17936 - (570) 875-xxxx - Westell 327W.

I have been having speed problems since early-mid January (6-7 weeks).

My sync speed 1792 KBits/sec (1.54 Mbps) will test as .3 Mbps or worse between hours of 5pm and 12 midnight. Sometimes my speed degrades as early as 2pm and might stay bad until after midnight.

I have been running several speed tests every day since I suspected a problem back in January and my findings have been consistent.

It seems pretty obvious to me too. They just ask me to remain patient as they work through the issue. Realistically, it shouldn't take 1 month to fix.

East Stroudsburg, PA 18302 610 420 Mod 7500. Service has been subpar for over a year.. Advertise a 3m/750kb service and I've never had anything consistent over 650k/750kb. They even offered but never applied ( I was too frustrated to fight it anymore) a $10 a month discount because I have such lousy service. When talking to the tech/Cust service reps they could not believe the low numbers on their speed test site.

Update on the 17019 Dillsburg issues. I've tried working with Verizon through the Verizon Direct here, and have had techs to my house to rule out line issues.

Still, (and now getting worse) speeds drop from 2.7Mpbs down to .3-.6 down in the evenings. Was starting at 7:00 PM to now as early as 5:30 PM.

They have tested lines, I've petitioned for a router change, and verizon indicated "there's no other router to move me to".

Seems their advertising "You’ll have a dedicated line from our central office to your home so your service won’t slow down just because your neighbors are online. That’s right—consistent speeds!", is blatently false.

I'm awaiting an answer from Verizon if there are any plans to address their oversold, lack of capacity issues.

Sounds like a perfect case for a class action lawsuit to me!!

at&t got hit with a class action and lost. But the court ruled, this off the top of my head, if at&t provisioned a subscriber below their advertised speed the subscriber would get $3 a month for each month. If a subscriber got less than 80% if his advertised speed less than 1/3 of the time he got $2 for each month.

Now Verizon has us provisioned at our speed and we get full speed 2/3 of the time; I have detailed records. It appears the children are staying in the house again with winter returning to the North East.
