Poor Speed in Butte

As the other thread has grown massively large I have decided to create a new thread. Not only to make it easier to read but also to mark a new tactic of mine for tracking speed throughout the day. As of this morning I have a speedtest set to run every 15 minutes from speedtest.net. Every night I will download the CSV file and create a chart of that day's speed which I will post here. Because this is done on speedtest.net and not Bresnan's own I cannot use the data collected as any proof of bad/poor service but I have not found a way to automate the process of running Bresnan's speedtest even though it shows the same data that speedtest.net shows.

The server I have selected for this test is the server in Cody, WY. I will probably experiment with a few different servers for a few days to see what, if any, difference the server makes.

Little bit different story tonight, didn't see as low of speeds... Ironically it has been like yesterday for the better part of the last month, then I post a graph and it gets a little (used loosely) better. Time will tell.

Decided to switch to Seattle, WA for today. Results are below.

I will let the chart speak for itself, but tonight was one of the worst nights that I have ever seen. Bresnan's own test to Billings didn't show more than 700Kb/s downstream at times. I was going to the Seattle server then changed to the Billings server at about 16:00 and I saw the same results there, too.

Then I thought that maybe it was the speedtest server not performing very well so I started the same thing from Powell to the same server...It wasn't the speedtest server.

Ran both tests to Billings today. On the left is Bresnan in Butte and on the right is TCT in Powell to the same Billings speedtest server. Not sure how much Bresnan's claim that these tests are unreliable is actually true but between these two I would have to say that I really wish my Bresnan line here in Butte looked like my folks' line does in Powell as far as consistency goes, speed aside.

Thanks for putting all this together - was considering maybe going back to Bresnan in Casper (Qwest's 1.5 is getting real old - but at least it's stable..) but figured Bresnan still has major congestion at night issues. Our Co's IT guy here still has it & said it's close to useless at night.

I was in Powell the other day & almost beat a friend over the head for still using Bresnan there....haha. Told him I'd love to have something like TCT in Casper...

Here are today's graphs. I have contemplated switching to Qwest but I guess I still hold a shred of hope that Cablevision upgrades our area either to a D3 CMTS or they split our node. That shred is diminishing but still there. Cable internet when done correctly and managed can be great.

Is this your server or an outside system?

EDIT: Nevermind.. I seen it came from speedtest.net.

My Cacti server is almost up (it would've been up if I wouldn't entered the wrong damn command and messed it up in the middle of the night) so I can monitor my connection here in Billings.

You mean the reporting or the server I am running the tests to? I am running the tests through speedtest.net using Lightnex's server in Billings, which is off-network for both Bresnan and TCT. The charts are just me downloading the CSV file from speedtest.net of the tests from Powell and Billings and plugging it into Excel.

The test in Powell is running from my Dell PE 860 QC Xeon running Server 08 R2 (which is also the webserver for my website and also runs some VMs which help collect the weather data for my site) and the test in Butte is running from a homebuilt i7 930/QC rig running W7 Professional.

Wow.. All I can say is.. "WTH??" Why is Bresnan bouncing through Denver to get back to Billings?

Wait.. 360-NETWORK.. Ahh crap. I thought they'd have at least a little peering agreement here in MT instead of having to bounce through Level3 (almost) a thousand miles away.

Come on..

Forgot to post yesterday's graphs. There were three Bresnan trucks working on our node yesterday, went over and talked to them and they said they got dispatched out just now because someone called saying they had slow speeds. I have had a ticket open since at least November and everytime I check in on it they say it has been dispatched to the local engineer but they haven't found anything yet.

At any rate, they said they are adding two additional channels to our node on top of the two existing channels, effectively doubling capacity but that still doesn't help if two SpeedPlus customers are going full tilt it would still saturate that channel. I asked about D3/channel bonding and they said they didn't know when they were going to do something like that...

Cacti server is up and stable. I'll add a plugin for speedtests soon.
I don't think I'll be using standard FTP, but a legal torrent. Just have to find one that's a reasonable size (around 50MB). That should provide reliable results.

So far, my pings are rather decent. I'll be adding a few Bresnan routers to my ping graphs, including their link to Level3.

If I had more time I would set up a Cacti Server...maybe some weekend I will block out some time to get it done. Until then I will keep doing what I have been doing.

Did a test at 8p last night with it running 30 linux torrents at once. I think I was limited by the wireless card and the crappy 11g AP I have, though.

I had to run Butte's numbers twice just to be 100% sure...I didn't hit higher than 12.88Mb/s all day today on Bresnan. A Bresnan truck was in the area this afternoon. Wasn't working on the node, actually not sure what he was doing...Fingers crossed for efforts to fix this.

Anywho, here are the charts for March 3rd.

EDIT: ahem...that was supposed to say March 2nd. Looked at the date on my clock and just wrote what I saw instead of backpedaling a day.

Here are the charts for March 3rd.

This is looking a bit better. Still not all that consistent but certainly an improvement and a large step in the right direction. You can clearly see when they switched us over to the Arris CMTS at about 00:15 this morning. I only hope that things improve from this point and not degrade back to where it was.

It should be noted that I changed from the Billings server to Casper right at midnight on the 3rd so all tests are to Casper from both locations.
