Home Network Setup

Thought I would do a little tour of our home network setup.

We'll start outside at the ONT, bringing in 50mbps fiber and POTS.

Next we move into the garage, where the battery backup for the ONT is mounted.

Next to that is the patch panel and uplink, and my little homeade rack. The patch panel terminates all the CAT-5 ran throughout the house.

In the rack, I've got a gigabit switch, a router, (neoware PC running m0n0wall), and a Linux web/fileserver. To the left of that is a couple of UPSes and some backup hard drives.

Moving into the house, first we have a little kitchen computer. It's a Mac mini stashed in the cabinet and a 12" display mounted under the cabinet. A wireless mouse and keyboard can be easily tucked away if needed.

In the living room, we've got a 52" LCD with a PS3, Wii, Apple TV, and Dish Network. Behind the TV, I've got all the wiring in one plate.

Moving to the bedroom, there's a 37" LCD with another Wii and an Apple TV. The Dish receiver is dual room, so there's coax running from it to the back of this TV.

Also in the living room is an AirPort Extreme, wired in from behind the couch along with the surround sound speakers. We also have a couple of MacBook Pros.

Moving upstairs, there's an iMac in each room.

I've mounted a photo frame and a 21" LCD on the wall. The wiring is on the other side, where there's attic access. The frame pulls photos wirelessly from Flickr and the LCD display is hooked up to a WD TV Live Plus box, which is behind the wall (along with an IR repeater).

I guess that's about it, thanks for looking

Thanks for sharing, I've always wanted to see inside one of those ONT's. However I find it interesting that they stripped back that much of the sheathing on that Ethernet Connection.

I would fire the person that stripped that much jacket off and untwisted the ethernet drop... That is completely unacceptable as a method of installation.

Nice setup, who is your provider? I wonder why the did not provision ENET 1 though. I like Calix products as they are easy to setup and support all kinds of configurations. That Ethernet cable is terrible and the insulation will corrode over time and give you trouble. Even the wire for the battery backup is stripped way back. Nice to see that the used the Opti-tap fiber up to the ONT.

The Ringgold Telephone Company in Ringgold, GA. We used to do IPTV and typically we would provision video on ENET 1.

This weekend I'm gonna re-run and re-terminate that CAT-5.

Awesome setup, I'm jealous.

I think I have the same cover on my Macbook Pro... so I have question for you:

Have you managed to remove the LCD lid portion of the cover? I've wanted to do so to clean out any dust/dirt accumulation, but I'm always afraid of breaking something when I try to remove it.

The sharp 90 degree turn on the fiber where it enters the ONT is charming...
