looking for a netbook

I am looking for a netbook........

Features in order of importance:

- boot from USB [memory card] (and hopefully run linux (puppy, dsl, etc... maybe)

- run google docs

- VGA output connection

- reasonable internet browsing and speed

- prefer no HDD.

I really dont want windows 7, but if I can boot linux, then it wont really matter.

What do you think??

Amazon ratings on ASUS seems to be pretty good.

Thank you for your help!

I don't love netbooks so much anymore, the friggin' Atom processor is just to lame. Maybe a dual core? Anyhow, all the netbooks are pretty much all the same.

I have an MSI Wind netbook I got 2 yrs ago on Black Friday and I still love it. It definitely is not the fastest but for web browsing, email, MS office, acrobat, utorrent, videoconferencing, even a little AutoCAD here and there it has been more than fast enough. It definitely is NOT my quad core Q6600 desktop but it does ok.

If you are going to use it as a main computer you may want to reconsider as the size and speed would probably get annoying if used all the time. You can get a used 14" non widescreen laptop for around the same price.

I can't speak to booting from usb with these but an eee pc based around a dual core atom and the ion chipset should be a decent choice. I'm not sure that any google docs problems you may be having are a result of your machine.

IMHO, for your stated usage, any basic netbook will do the job. Problem with some of the higher end netbooks is that you are blurring the cost between a netbook, with as nerdburg mentioned, a performance limited Atom cpu, versus a full featured thin and light (12" - 13") notebook.

For what you want to do, no need to go over $200. That is the rub with eschewing the traditiaonl mechanical hard drive.

I assume that you are talking about a netbook with a SSD? (if not, my apologies). While solid state storage seems like it is tailor-made for a netbook, unless you want a tiny amount of storage (which may work for you), the cost of a SSD can be fully 40% or more the cost of the unit, not a good configuration cost-wise. Again, however, if a very small amount of storage space will suffice, that is another story...

I have a HP Mini 110 (2 years old) which we love for quick browsing, knock-around use etc., but I would not spend a lot of money on one (at today's prices). If my needs for a netbook called for much more than the minimum configuration, then I'd go with a notebook instead.

What would be totally cool would be to simply unplug the HDD... and boot the thing off of a USB memory card (linux) and have the VGA out port still work!

Virtually any netbook can do this.

Since netbooks generally don't come with CD-ROM drives, most netbook BIOS can 'boot from USB' in order to install operating systems.

If you can 'boot from USB' to install an operating system, there's nothing stopping you from 'boot from USB' to load an operating system.

On an unrelated note, are gdfsfghdfgdf and asdfdfdfdfdf related? The names are similar and you guys have the same avatar. LOL

Yes, they are related

I just tab into the "pick a user name box" and then let my cat type in the name for me....
