Open source just indicates that someone can inspect and audit the code, not that it is guaranteed backdoor free. Though I agree it is generally a better option than the closed alternatives.
Of course even if your software is 100% backdoor free, it means little when your ISP and hardware manufacturers could be collaborating with the FBI.
