Re: [IL] WTF? Popups from MediaCom????

I have very limited information on this but it is something we are going to track. If you are seeing this can you please PM me your Telephone# or Account# and what you are seeing? Also, if you try to opt out and it doesn't work please let me know.

@mchsi.com

Will our monthly cable bill fee be reduced with this extra income mediacom's generating by placing ads on our already paid for service??

Thanks for looking into it, Chad.

In related news, I just had to opt out of Mediacom's "redirect service" again tonight.

Should all these 3rd party sites Mediacom is filling with ads have to opt-in to such an agreement in the first place?

I'm in the Chicago suburbs and started getting these a couple of days ago as well. For me, the ad does not appear every time you open IE - perhaps once every ten times I open IE. Given the bad grammar in the ad, it initially made me think that I'd somehow picked up some sort of spyware. Then, I went and checked that my business' web site (which is my homepage) had not been compromised and changed. Then, I went to see if the homepage setting in IE had been changed. When I finally captured the HTML of what was being displayed and saw an IP address of 97.64.255.1 that resolved back to Mediacom itself and these postings, everything became clearer - at least it's not just my PC being infected. However, if Mediacom is doing this on purpose this is such a bad idea that I cannot even fathom how someone could believe this wasn’t going to create an uproar and massive customer confusion. If this is the case, a number of people need to be fired. Today.

However, is it possible that some part of Mediacom's network infrastructure has instead been compromised to serve these ads up and there's something else going on that isn't apparent? Even though the link in the ad (which never seems to change) seems to go to a Mediacom web site for phone service, given that the ad has incorrect grammar and there's no verbiage to indicate that this is a "legitimate" (albeit stupidly conceived) ad, I'm really wondering if some part of their infrastructure has been compromised. I await hearing where this all ultimately leads.

And given that I spent a couple of hours tracking all of this down, what is Mediacom going to do to make customers whole for their aggravation and time? I just talked to tech support and they wouldn’t give me anything for my troubles but seem to now be aware of the problem at least. Unbelievable.

I'd suggest contacting someone in Mediacom that knows exactly what you are all are doing, why, and how, before you comment too much on this.

This is a great way to send the proverbial brown stuff into the spinning blades for your company very very fast.

I will absolutely be moving everyone in town that I have contact with that uses Mediacom as an ISP to other providers if this practice continues.

Who do we send the invoices too? We charge advertisers for premium ad locations and if Mediacom will continue this practice, then we we will be invoicing you for our services.

You sound like you know much more than you want to let on! Why would you advise using the opt out link if you questioned its safety? Furthermore, why would you be interested in how well it works if this is not intentional? That's because you know it's no accident! Otherwise, any decent tech or user would never advise to click a random "opt-out" link that may not be what it says it is. Your company's actions are despicable. Lying is even worse. I suggest you come clean now, before the backlash is much, much worse against your company and eventually turns on you. Don't assume your users or members of this board were born yesterday. Too many corporations make that mistake. Yeah, targeted Mediacom ads are just an accident. Thanks for the laugh!

Selenia, Chad may not know much of anything about this problem. One thing MC is notorious for is a lack of communication between departments.

I'm not entirely certain that Chad doesn't know much about it, rudnicke. "it is something we are going to track", from a member of the company, sounds more like, "we're going to track the complaints we get, and if it crosses a threshold, we'll change our ways, otherwise we'll continue to roll it out to more markets."

If anyone here actually thought that it meant, "we're not sure where it's coming from, so we're tracking complaints to narrow it down to a specific server to shut the service off", I don't think it would have reached the point that is has so far, even discounting some of the inflamed and exaggerated responses.

The response from MCC on MCC's message board was sufficiently vague and deflective to quash the discussion and blame the Marketing department for the time being. Chad stating that they're tracking it suggests that he's more aware of it than the people on the MCC message boards.

That doesn't mean that he's responsible or culpable for what's currently happening, of course, but I certainly don't think that it's a matter of poor internal communication, either.

That is a reasonable summation. Chad's phrasing definitely sounds like he was told to say that and no more.

This

Having worked for Mediacom in the past, they were incredibly tight lipped on some things, and as the field tech, I was often told, this is the way it is, either they buy it or they dont.

I would imagine that MediacomChad See Profile is probably a Tier II ISR, and that is another position that doesnt know about something until after it is implemented.

IDK how many times the marketing department would come up with a deal and not tell anybody about it. The technicians were supposed to be able to offer some of the best deals, then marketing would go beyond that....

Mediacom's departments DO NOT communicate at all...

I am not implying he's responsible for what Mediacom is doing. Only that I believe he knows what is going on, but is not letting it on due to some corpoate gag order. That would just make MCC another victim of corporate politics, besides the consumer. The consumer just wants the truth.

Does Marketing really have the power and knowledge to do something like this? I would suspect there was more involved than just Marketing to get something like this implemented.

I really have no idea what their marketing department has the skills to do.

But I have to say, that I firmly believe that somebody like MeduiacomChad would not have had any knowledge of sneaky underhanded tactics like this.

It would have been pretty high in the company, and sneaky crap like this would have probably been pretty quiet... Just like the DNS Redirect fiasco.

FWIW, when I was at somebody's house, I would be presented a coupon that was printed from a website that I did not recognize. I would honor it to the best of my ability, present it to my boss who would then forward it up the ladder, and eventually we find that it is legitimate.

The technical side of Mediacom literally had no idea what the marketing side is doing unless it required hardware upgrades in the local area.

When Mediacom MAX was announced, the marketing department decided that it would be required to be bundled with Mediacom's Home Networking package, all installed for a nominal $150 to set up a router, and extra for wireless adapters. I was the only tech in my area that was able to do the installations, and I screamed and threw tantrums about the requirement, but nobody cared. We were also required to set it up with WEP encryption... I screamed and threw a fit about that... Nobody cared. There was a firmware problem that the vendor recognized and had issued updates for, and I literally had to get the firmware from a tech at another cable company and flash the firmware updates myself to fix issues. I screamed for the firmware update to be pushed down... Nobody cared.

The technical side of Mediacon (While I was employed there) was rendered blind, deaf, and dumb... And that was the way that corporate liked it.

You opt out by canceling your Mediacom service. Pretty sure that's what he meant.
