[ps3] Talk about ridiculous overcharging ...

So my PS3 Slim has been having problems with my HDMI connection. On my TV's device list it constantly will flicker between the on or off list which makes selecting the proper device difficult. Not only that, but when watching a DVD this flickering can be seen by the TV losing signal to the device and you're left with no video for about a second before getting your picture back.

Called Sony, and they first had me restore the firmware and when that didn't work they had me reformat the HDD. After all that, it's still doing the same flickering. Apparently after reading around on some forums this issue is well known with the Slims. Supposedly the HDMI connector is not properly soldered onto the board.

The best part, Sony wants $174 for me to send in the device. So for them to fix this HDMI issue, they want roughly 2/3 of the price of a brand new device. Seems like a pretty big rip off to me and seems more of a backhanded method of getting people to buy new devices rather than waiting at minimum a month only to get back a refurbished device.

What a cop out. At least when the 360 had the RROD issues Microsoft extended the warranty for this issue. I believe the total warranty was 5 years for RROD issues, though I could be wrong. With the news of the rootkit and how Sony is forcing users to upgrade firmware and lose their Linux OS, it seems like Sony is headed down the wrong path.

My only option now is to try and buy some component video cables and hope that works. This was the last thing I wanted to do, but Sony leaves me no other option.

Did you try a different TV and a different HDMI cable?

I bought a new HDMI wire and had the same results as well as tried different HDMI ports on my TV (3 in total). I'm actually trying the different TV aspect now while I await my order of component video cables. Only problem is as the other TV has no device list it could take longer due to the random occurrences of it happening in a video.

I agree about it being a rip off to have to pay Sony for their lack of quality assurance. I got a 3 year extended warranty on my 2nd PS3 through SquareTrade, so hopefully if I have any major problems with mine, it will happen within this time-frame. If my system fails again, I will no longer send Sony money for anything. Planned premature obsolescence is getting ridiculous!

Don't worry, scro. There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick-ass lives.

I hear more talk about the flickering being caused by the "handshake" between devices. Have you tried putting the PS3 on a different TV altogether to see if maybe the issue is how the TV communicated to the PS3? Also I hear having good HDMI cables helps. Are the new cables the kind as your old? Did you get cables with better insulation or wire thickness?

I'm not seeing enough on the "solder" solution to say that's the prevalent issue.

I'm currently in the process of testing the "handshake" solution. We'll see how that works out.

The HDMI cables are fine. They work in any other device such as a 360 or a BD player.

Samsung, specifically the LNA40A530P. Testing on another Samsung (not sure which model), and so far no hiccups, but only one test and since it's random still in the process of testing.

Update, sorry it took so long.

I received my wire Monday/Tuesday, so I've been testing it for the past few days. Yeah, it took almost a month since ordering for the wire to arrive.

Using component I set the PS3 to 1080p as it defaults to 480p on component. First thing I noticed was no longer did the PS3 constantly turn on and off in my TV's device list. This was a huge annoyance when switching devices.

Second, I've watched maybe 5 movies, DVD's and BD's combined, and haven't had any dropouts. Considering it's random I could be wrong, but I think it's safe to say the component wire has solved and out performed HDMI.

Best $10 I've spent.
