DOCSIS 3.0 Modem

I am new to Knology and I read where Knology rents DOCSIS 2.0 modems and I guess that is what they rented to me. It is a ARRIS CM550A modem. I went to the ARRIS web site and the modem is DOCSIS 2.0.
Would a DOCSIS 3.0 modem do any improvements to my connection?
It just seems that since they provide DOCSIS 3.0 internet service here then a modem capable of DOCSIS 3.0 is the way to go.

Motorola SB6120 is what you need. Best D3 modem out there in my book.

Hello bigdusty. I know we are supposed and I use that word with a grain of salt supposed to be getting DOCSIS 3.0 here in Columbus, GA. So you would recommend the Motorola SB6120 as far as upgrading to a cable modem? Would there be anything else you'd recommend? Thanks for your input!

I run the SB6120 myself and have had no issues with it. From what I understand Knology only supports two D3 modems the Motorola SB6120 and the Arris WBM760.

I have three of the Cisco/Webstar/Scientific Atlanta 2100r2's. These have been good for the 25/5 edge speeds that are available here. Knology says that the 6120 is what's needed for docsis 3, but the edge speeds are well within docsis 2 specs, so it doesn't make a difference here.

The downside of staying with the old D2 modems is you get one downstream channel to use. With a D3 modem you get 4 downstream channels to use.

And from what I can tell, this doesn't seem to make any difference. I still get the full 25mb if there's a server out there that can transfer that quick.

Knology was just installed in my area last month, and I was able to have a technician come about a week ago and I am fully set up.

I am using their modem for the moment, going to buy a doc3.0 from newegg next week, but still even with a docsis2 modem I am very happy with the product

May not make a difference now but wait till things saturate again.

Just my 2 cents but...

I had Moto5100 (D2) and when D3 rolled out I could get the basic D3, non-edge, speeds - 12/2. I replaced the 5100 with a 6120 and now I get near 15/2.5 and have channel bonding active.

While a D2 modem can reach D3 speeds in spec, it seems that the D3 made a difference for me.

The config files are the same for both d2 and d3 modems. I would think that the spike is speed is a fluke with something on the back end. It really depends on how tightly your ISP locks stuff down. One of the modems I look after is on a 20-something/3 plan and it regularly spikes up to almost 30.

not quite right on your specs. Knology docsis 2.0 speed is limited to 22 down and 2 mbit up. not a limitation of docsis 2 itself just knology's implementation of it. Feel free to call their support and check. No Docsis 2.0 modem will go faster than 22 down on knology. The issue is due to the configuration file sent to the modems. not anything with the modem itself.

I'm not sure how that's possible when the poster above got 3.38mb and my upload results (skewed by my router) are above 2mb.

I've never had much confidence in Knology phone support. I've gotten three different answers on three different calls on the same question before.
