 | Potassium Iodide Stock What public companies manufacture Potassium Iodide?
(amazon sold out) |
|
 | Is this related to the potential meltdown in progress at the Japanese Nuclear Facility?
If so, the easiest way to potentially turn a buck from the whole quake/tsunami disaster is to buy American automaker stock because this mess is definitely going to shut down Japanese auto production for a few months to come. |
|
 | The lady at Rite Aid said people had been asking about Potassium Iodide. At least one of the products on Amazon was sold out. This disaster is a reminder to keep the stuff around. However, its so generic I doubt any one co will benefit.
Interesting thesis about american automakers. |

OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | reply to lugnut I disagree with your theory. While Japanese manufacturing may take a hit, it is unlikely the automakers will. My proof? My Honda Accord was manufactured in Marysville, Ohio.
Japanese cars produced in Japan may see a decrease, but the Japanese automakers have plenty of factories in North America. -- What smells like blue? |

 | reply to hoyleysox My apologies. Since you posted in a financial forum I assumed your intent was some kind of play.
As for the potassium iodide, I'd say just try your local pharmacies. I'd imagine at least a few of them would keep some stock.
As for the automaker thing, crass as it may be, the Warren Buffets of the world see this sort of misadventure as an opportunity. In fact, I believe that disaster and opportunity are the same word in one of the Chinese dialects. |
|
 | reply to Omega I can't speak as to any exact numbers here, and while I am well aware that in order to avoid protectionist trade measures Japanese carmakers moved much of their production to North America and Europe decades ago, Japan still remains the Detroit of Asian automaking.
I didn't mean to suggest that they were totally wiped out for the next 6 months to a year, but their bottom lines and production numbers WILL take a big hit.
Say what you will. For the next year or two Japanese carmakers will be hobbling along on a broken leg and Domestic and European carmakers will reap the benefits...
Your Accord may have been ASSEMBLED in OH but how many necessary production components came from overseas? |

What dosages of potassium iodide (KI) should be taken for specific exposure levels?
Exposures greater than 5 cGy: Birth through 1 mo. - 16 mg. 1 mo. through 3 yrs. - 32 mg. 3 yrs through 18 yrs. - 65 mg. (Adolescents>150 pounds should take adult dose.)
Exposures greater than 10 cGy: 18 yrs through 40 yrs. - 130 mg
Exposures greater than 500 cGy: Adults over 40 yrs - 130 mg.
How long should potassium iodide (KI) be taken?
Since KI protects for approximately 24 hours, it should be dosed daily until the risk no longer exists. Priority with regard to evacuation and sheltering should be given to pregnant females and neonates because of the potential for KI to suppress thyroid function in the fetus and neonate. Unless other protective measures are not available, we do not recommend repeat dosing in pregnant females and neonates.
Who should not take potassium iodide (KI) or have restricted use?
Persons with known iodine sensitivity should avoid KI, as should individuals with dermatitis herpetiformis and hypocomplementemic vasculitis, extremely rare conditions associated with an increased risk of iodine hypersensitivity. Individuals with multinodular goiter, Graves' disease, and autoimmune thyroiditis should be treated with caution -- especially if dosing extends beyond a few days.
What are the possible risks and side effects of taking potassium iodide (KI)?
Thyroidal side effects of KI at recommended doses rarely occur in iodine-sufficient populations such as the U.S. As a rule, the risk of thyroidal side effects is related to dose and to the presence of underlying thyroid disease (e.g., goiter, thyroiditis, Graves'). FDA recommends adherence to the Guidance on Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies7 for intervention threshold and dose, though we recognize that the exigencies of any particular emergency situation may mandate deviations from those recommendations. With that in mind, it should be understood that as a general rule, the risks of KI are far outweighed by the benefits with regard to prevention of thyroid cancer in susceptible individuals.
Should I check with my doctor first?
Potassium iodide (KI) is available over-the-counter (OTC). However, if you have any health concerns or questions, you should check with your doctor.
As we don't need this stuff now I'll wait until the newer and hopefully better drug comes out! I don't see no danger to the U.S. as we are well over 7,000 miles away from Japan! |

The PigBazinaPremium join:2009-09-11 1 edit | reply to hoyleysox I say about 300 miles away at least! I guess until a better drug hits the market Potassium Iodide will do! ================================================== The only agent that has been widely stockpiled to date for use in the event of an act of nuclear terrorism or a nuclear accident is potassium iodide (KI). However, KI is only effective against the long-term risk of cancer developing ten to fifteen years post-exposure. It does not protect the body from the acute effects of high dose radiation that can lead to death within days or weeks.

| reply to The Pig said by The Pig:Save your money and false hope of fighting off radiation exposure with some cheap over the counter junk! It doesn't "fight off radiation exposure". It satisfies the thyroid's demand for iodine so that it doesn't absorb radioactive iodine isotopes from the (freshly irradiated) environment. |
