I just posted on twitter, "What companies make/sell potassium iodide ?"

If you are interested in those companies as an investment, forget it. Potassium iodide is generic, meaning that any company can produce it. The demand will drop off, before they can increase production. I doubt that potassium iodide is on the commodities market.

Save your money and false hope of fighting off radiation exposure with some cheap over the counter junk!

It doesn't "fight off radiation exposure". It satisfies the thyroid's demand for iodine so that it doesn't absorb radioactive iodine isotopes from the (freshly irradiated) environment.

Excellent points. Here's the thing, the thyroid is generally the first to get hit so KI is good to have but it doesn't protect any other part of your body, so while it's helpful it's not a cureall or total preventative.

several German chemical companies make the majority of vitamin supplement powders that are pilled and marketed by others, and these companies are so large that no one supplement demand spike is going to impact their bottom line. the scare profits won't come from the powder makers who generally sell by a set margin above production costs, rather the marketers and resellers that set finished goods prices and gouge customers for as long as the shortages and panic exist. Months from now I expect to read about a lot of fraud from these nuke pills as anyone can buy a piller machine, stuff tablets with chalk, and say they are Iodide pills - there is no consumer protection or quality control whatsoever in the supplement market. basically, the only rule is - as long as the ingredients are not toxic, you can claim and sell pretty much whatever you like in pill form. BTW if you can't find Iodide, seaweed flakes and powders made from Kelp and Dulse offer the same type or protection in a less concentrated form, and no - there is no seaweed pure play either

Your comment about seaweed flakes and kelp is very interesting. Both are common in Japanese diets but not for us Americans.

Thanks for the post. I am inclined to agree with your points.

Supposedly this is how to tests pills for potassium iodide. Not so easy.

Iodine 131 only has a half life of 8.02 days. By the time the companies you invest in ramped up production, the threat would have already passed

Iodine-129 is the problem from reactors,
Iodine-131 is from medical applications.

update: I stand corrected - 129 is the common fallout danger, and the 8 day half life means by the time it comes to the USA is may be benign. the greater danger comes from Cesium-137 with a 30 year half life, and is the current problem around western Europe since Chernobyl. other fallout isotopes may include iodine-132, tellurium-132 xenon-133.

it's worth noting that Iodide blocks the body's absorption of only one of several nuclear isotopes getting out into the environment. there really is no way to block them all - that's why the hero's trying to submerge the fuel rodes in Japan can only work near the plant for under an hour at a time. then there's the gama rays glowing off the rods themselves, but let's not get too sidetracked here. best to stay on investment plays on this thread. there are plenty of other parts of the forum discussing the science, politics, and human drama of it all - we should stick to the economics here.

anyone got a pure Salt play?

BTW, I did have an idea for a pure play we can discuss. we all know food prices and food producers are going up, but it occurred to me that since Japan's fish & rice economy will be severely effected by these multiple disasters, that they will need to import more animal protein and grains like poultry and corn. so companies like Tyson and Monsanto should do even better in coming years, prompting food prices in USA to rise even faster than before.

Great link! Blogs like that are more informative than the news. It is empowering to be informed by quality information.

I am still awaiting delivery of the two packs of Iosat that I ordered 3/12.

My small supply of KI will/would be finite but the radiation duration is practically infinite so I would still be screwed in the long run if it gets bad. At the time, I was thinking if shit really hit the fan I could defer waits in line for a government distribution while my friends, family and I used our own supply.

Wish I had taken a screenshot of the google search results from that day, there is a big difference between then and now.
