Japan might accelerate its plan (May 9, 2010) for installing offshore wind turbines.

A senior government panel has drafted a plan calling for the establishment by 2020 of massive offshore wind farms capable of producing at least 1,000 megawatts of power, equivalent to the output of roughly 10 nuclear power plants, a source said Saturday.

I think that is better, if they say the offshore wind farms can produce 10x the power of one nuclear, but it still mentions challenges with quakes/tsunamis. It's clean as well. They probably consider energy independence and emissions; at any time relations can sour & emissions are an invisible threat to health.

But to blame the Nuclear Bogeyman and replace all Nuclear plants with fossil fuels, over one incident caused on their east coast on one extraordinary external event in what they say was once in a lifetime. Why not keep the west coast reactors, at least? Doesn't sound as if they employed an army of Homer Simpson clones to build and run the plants, like 3MI or Chernobyl.

Maybe they could use magical leprechauns to solve their problems and get free pots of gold too.
