Simba7I Void Warranties join:2003-03-24 Billings, MT | My Home Network Here's 3 servers from my network.. I'll post more when I get done with school.
BOXX Server (4 of them with exact specs except HDDs) Supermicro X5DPL-8GM Motherboard Dual Intel Xeon 2.4GHz 1GB ECC DDR266 RAM CD-ROM Drive Floppy Drive 3ware 9500S-4LP PCI-X Controller Card (all are set up for RAID5)
BOXX Server #1 4x Western Digital WD15EARS SATA HDDs (LCC Disabled)
BOXX Server #2 4x Seagate ST32000542AS SATA HDDs (Firmware CC35)
BOXX Server #3 4x Western Digital WD20EARS SATA HDDs (LCC Disabled)

I have 2x modified Poweredge 2450's with 4x Western Digital WD6400AARS each on their own 3ware 8506-4LP card (RAID5 of course). I'll get those pics later on.
As for the 2X4 rack, it's been in service for 6 years and it's getting due to be changed out to a real rack. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment so we're kinda stuck with it for now. -- Bresnan 18M/1M MyWS[i7-870@4.1GHz,16GB RAM,2x1TB HDDs,Win7] WifeWS[A64@2GHz,2GB RAM,120GB HDD,Win7] Router[2xP3@1GHz,512MB RAM,18GB HDD,SMC 8432BTA,2xDigital DE504,Compaq NC3131,Intel Pro/1000MT,IBM Gbit Ethernet-SX,Allied Telesyn AT2560FX,Gentoo Linux] | | sk1939 join:2010-10-23 france kudos:6 | What do you do with over that much space?!? What does your network look like, I'm sure there's no doubt that you could max a gig connection. | | Simba7I Void Warranties join:2003-03-24 Billings, MT | said by sk1939:What do you do with over that much space?!? Here's the rack. I took it with my D2G due to the little ones hiding my camera.

Actual racks (42U) are rather pricy and hard to find up here, so I had to build this one 6 years ago. Hopefully, someday, I'll find a real one to put all this into.
Also, it is a little messy. Reason? Full time student and little time to rearrange. Hopefully, this weekend I can get things looking decent. -- Bresnan 18M/1M MyWS[i7-870@4.1GHz,16GB RAM,2x1TB HDDs,Win7] WifeWS[A64@2GHz,2GB RAM,120GB HDD,Win7] Router[2xP3@1GHz,512MB RAM,18GB HDD,SMC 8432BTA,2xDigital DE504,Compaq NC3131,Intel Pro/1000MT,IBM Gbit Ethernet-SX,Allied Telesyn AT2560FX,Gentoo Linux] | | | I'll repeat the other guy's question, what do you use all that for?
| sk1939 join:2010-10-23 france kudos:6 | Indeed. You could benefit from a LAN upgrade from 10/100 to Gig-E as well. Having been to Billings, I can safely say that the lack of places to get a 42U rack is not surprising.... | | Simba7I Void Warranties join:2003-03-24 Billings, MT | reply to howardfine Mostly personal file storage. I bought almost all of the drives during Black November on Newegg.com for a rather good price. At $59 or $69 for 2TB, I jumped right on it.
I kinda figured, if the MPAA/RIAA start restricting on how much disk space you can get and/or having to register over xTB with them (who knows, it could happen) I'll at least have a decent chunk before they pull it off.
The top BOXX server is running Gallery, it's main purpose is to store and display pictures from our entire family on the internal LAN and VPN.
The second BOXX server is the Media Server. That's where we're storing our movies and music.
The third BOXX server is unknown. I'll figure out what to do with it at a later date.
The fourth BOXX server doesn't have HDDs yet. Had to use the funds for a higher priority task.
The Compaq Desktop server is used for Cacti. It monitors everything (CPU Temps, CPU Usage, HDD Temps, I/O Usage, Network traffic, etc).
The first PE2550 is for archiving.
The second PE2550 is the Squid server. It caches and stores HTTP and FTP sites.. and ya, 1.8TB is kinda overkill.
The first PE6350 is a Gaming Server.
The second PE6350 is a Windows 2008 Server. It's basically there to help me through school (taking a class). -- Bresnan 18M/1M MyWS[i7-870@4.1GHz,16GB RAM,2x1TB HDDs,Win7] WifeWS[A64@2GHz,2GB RAM,120GB HDD,Win7] Router[2xP3@1GHz,512MB RAM,18GB HDD,SMC 8432BTA,2xDigital DE504,Compaq NC3131,Intel Pro/1000MT,IBM Gbit Ethernet-SX,Allied Telesyn AT2560FX,Gentoo Linux] | | | reply to Simba7 you sir, need to virtualize! I bet you could get at least 4 of those machines onto 1. Cacti, media, gallery, archiving, maybe gaming depending on how heavy it's being used. | | Simba7I Void Warranties join:2003-03-24 Billings, MT | Can't do virtualization, and the processors can't do it either.
..unless you want to buy me a brand new server, then I'd be glad to do it. Until then, I'll make due with what I've got. I didn't pay much for the 4x BOXX servers anyway ($150 for all 4 shipped).
I'd love to build a brand new server, but the wife won't let me buy any more computer parts. | | TheMGPremium join:2007-09-04 Canada kudos:1 Reviews:

But then I think of all the things I would no longer be able to do if I had one, and then I feel a lot better.
