I accept all cookies for the current session only (and close my browser at least daily), and whitelist ones that I want to keep longer (banks, etc). With Firefox this is easy, with Chrome I ended up using the Vanilla extension.

Edit: And block all third-party cookies in all browsers.

I'm trying Vanilla extension with

Clear unwanted cookies on startup, checked

and in Chrome, blocking third-party cookies and ignoring exceptions.

Then clicking to add desired sites to Vanilla whitelist.
