Terrible Latency

For the past few days in Bozeman, MT near the school campus i have had good bandwidth however the latency on my service keeps spiking from around 350 ms to 2k+ms, On a good day, we average we get around 120ms.

When directly connecting to the modem we have no problems at all however when we use a router this problem occurs. This has been tested on 3 different routers and each has the same problem.

One would suspect that this is a router problem and thats what Bresnan Customer service says and therefore won't help.

The last few nights for a period of 2-4 hours the internet(with router) will work perfectly as it did before this random latency started occuring.

Please help.

If you have a router capable of Tomato you could flash up to it and use its QoS traffic shaping to throttle traffic, presumably your roommate was doing P2P or something else that was saturating your bandwidth. Set it in a lower queue, such as E, and only allocate 100Kb/s to that queue or whatever suits you best. That way it will only saturate 100Kb/s of your total bandwidth instead of all of it.

That second hop would be my first clue on what's going on.

I think dd-wrt and openwrt have it, too.

DD-WRT does but you can only get to the level of Tomato customization in the paid version of DD-WRT. OpenWRT has it as well.

I have been on Qwest list for 3 years and they still will not give me anything over 1meg service even thought their Florence Carlton fiberoptic demarc box is across the highway from me. I went with Bresnan T hursday march 17th and so far the connection into MSLA is over 18MB and upload is faster than Quest download I am very happy!
