Heck Of A DealFound this, signed up, a couple of quirks to be sure but fully manageable, "unlimited" everything, as it were, but very nice service for 3 years for $.99. Definitely worth it, be sure to pay the 99 cents with Paypal or they will auto renew you in 3yrs at a much higher rate. » www.hostable.comRun by brinskter, who has been around for a long time. |

A deal that it may be, but I don't put any faith on a host offering unlimited bandwidth/space, for one, not possible. |

I figured I would give them a try, I was bored and I mean its 99 cents for 3 years! If anything I need a place that is not related to my current host for a backup email account etc.
I signed up and used paypal as I had a few bucks left over in my account and during the redirect I got a 404 not found but I did get confirmation email from paypal and my host account got created, I opened a ticket and within a few minutes it was fixed and my cpanel account was created.
The server I am on seems allright, Intel Xeon X3430 with 4GB of ram and 500GB of total disk space of which only 1% (less then 1GB in /home is in use) is in use. load average of 0.00 to 0.02 so it must be a new box.
Edit: forgot to mention the server uses a LSI MR9260-4i Raid controller so that is good, at least its not fake on board raid even if it is SATA drives. |

Also gave it a try. No problem with signup, but stuff was missing from my Cpanel, like fantastico. Online chat support put in a trouble ticket...easy access to support. Pretty sure chat agent was in India, even though Hostable claims USA support. Seemed competent, but US agents don't flood their conversations with all that polite phrasing...."I very much apologize for the inconvenience, sir..." |

Well I am sure they are busy but I opened 2 tickets exactly 24 hours ago and have yet to hear back. they are simple tickets of 2 things that need to be fixed (missing fantastico for example) and no word yet.
24 hours is pushing it a bit for a simple ticket. |

My fantastico ticket was handled in about 12 hrs, although the actual ticket took more than 24 hrs to be posted as closed. |

So open a Paypal account. Or, use a virtual account number from your credit card. |

so far the server itself has been ok (I am not exactly running a big site) but the helpdesk has been horrible. First fantastico was not setup on my account, now fantastico refuses to install anything and my ticket has been open for days now with no updates. For example if I try to install drupal using fantastico it installs it and everything looks ok but when I go to my url I get errors. I tried the exact same process on my surpass account and it works fine. I know it is 99 cents but they could at least give me a working acount to start with |

Right now my server is down completely. Got right through to tech support. He said he would inform the admin and it should just be a few min. Still down after 15 min.
Oh well, at 99 cents my alternative was to spend it on a Slurpee. Saved some calories, I guess. |

Just so you know, the company just sent out an email to clarify things. The deal is still the same, and they are just letting you know that after 3 years, they will (try) to renew you for 3 months of service $ 6.99 a month.
The message:
It says that AFTER 3 years, they will renew it at $6.99 a month for 3 months at a time. It is still listing on the front page of the site that is "free" for 3 years.
Thank you for signing up at Hostable and giving us a try. There has been some confusion about a few aspects of our service that I would like to clarify.
1. We are *NOT* over-subscribing or over-selling this service. Hostable is owned by Brinkster, and we have been in this business for 12 years. Our intention is to provide you with high quality service and support so that you will want to renew and stay with us!
2. Your account will renew for 3 months (not 3 years) at the rate of $6.99 per month you can login to your account and verify this. We will be offering discounts and incentives that will save you additional money. We made this change to help you understand that we are not trying to force you to pay us $250 USD when your account renews in three years.
3. We removed the miscellaneous fees and the $35 Early Termination Fee from sections 5.05 and 5.09 of the Terms of Service. You will not be charged these fees.
4. Hostable is 100% Wind Powered and you can add a cool green badge to your website for free. See them here.
Please tell your friends about Hostable and help us spread the word about this awesome deal and send us a like on Facebook.
Let us know if you have any questions or if we can help in any way!
Thank you, |

And yet another not from the CEO, just received:
Please understand - you are still getting 3 YEARS of free hosting! The only change we made was that you will now renew for 3 months instead of 3 years!
ONLY the renewal changed. We did not change the initial 3 year free time period.
Many of you did not like that the account would renew for another 3 years after your first 3 years for free. So we changed that to 3 months. Now the renewal is $20.97 USD instead of $250 USD.
I apologize for any confusion this caused.
Thank you,
Jared Stauffer CEO, Hostable.com

I still have a ticket opened since the 26th of March, still not resolved.
When I install drupal using fantastico it does not work (well it installs but when I go to the new site it has a sql error)
Works fine on my Surpass account.
I know I can install it manually but that is not the point. |

24/7 Support from the USA With our toll-free 800 contact number or our easy to use live chat support system, you will be able to contact us quickly and easily to get your questions answered. Average wait times for email/ticket response are one hour and for live chat it is 2 minutes. Guess I shouldn't hold my breath on my ticket from Thurs. (PHP mail() function doesn't work... works fine at Hostgator and even 1and1!) Takes over a minute for Hostable account login page to respond. Think I'm better off paying $6/mo elsewhere than to be a guinea pig for their server installations. |

Thanks for posting this. I have been paying HostGator $10 a month for several years for pretty much nothing... I don't really have a site, just toy around with scripts once in a while so this will be perfect for my needs. |

Well, I gave up on these guys....down time is ridiculous and, despite the fact that their servers are in my city, their pings suck.
I an now using Preston Host. I hunted down a deal and paid only $11 for a year, guaranteed price for future renewals. Their servers are in L.A., and their pings are FANTASTIC-I mean 17-19ms from here in AZ to L.A.
So far, no downtime at all. 0, for 2 months. Well worth the cheap $'s. |

Just wanted to drop an update on support.
They Suck! simple as that.
Here is an example call I place about that Drupal issue I mentioned.
Ticket created on 03/26/2011 02:48 Ticket resolved on 04/06/2011 15:55
Also the 1 hour average response time is not accurate, I have opened about 5 tickets so far for silly stuff that does not work and every time it was way more then 1 hour (days in one instance before I even got any kind of reply)
PS: Those times are from the control panel support ticket system and not from my own email, so if my emailed delayed or something the time stamps would not be affected.

It is over 250$ for 3 years, its cheap but its still not that cheap. Just because they have a promo doesnt excuse them of offering this level of support. |

I agree, ticket support is dreadful, and the kind of tickets I've filed are for basic things that are advertised as "included" in the package but MIA on my account... like Fantastico.
Hostable's documentation is thin...just the cPanel template docs. No info on all the little quirky stuff that every host has: alternate email ports, paths, mail config, etc...
The solution to each of my tickets was to directly email jared@hostable.com. He's the boss, answers his email promptly and politely... and gets the problem du jour solved right away.
While my hat's off to Jared for being a stand up - buck stops here kind of guy, this is no way to run a hosting business, and I'll be sticking with my shared hosting at Hostgator. My personal time probably isn't worth much, but whatever time I spend chasing down Hostable problems isn't worth the $5/mo. I might be saving. |
