Android Phone Make/Receive WiFi calls with VT SIP?

I have a Droid (currently waiting for some more 4G phones to show up before I retire it) and I'm wondering if anyone out there has come up with a way to make and receive calls on it via WiFi using the VT SIP credentials?

Might be kinda nice while I'm on the road where WiFi is sometimes much better than the cell service.

Wouldn't Fring, Viber, etc all work?

2.3 will have Sip built in, so no need for Fring. However i would like to have a viatalk sip number on my phone.

I'm running 2.3.3 (Rooted and replacement ROM).

I have a setting under Call Settings that says "Use Internet calling" and the options are "For all calls", "Only for Internet calls" and "Ask for each call".

The only issue is that I see no place to enter any SIP credentials.

I take that back! Just above that entry in Call Settings is an "Accounts" setting and under that you have the option to "Add account". Clicking that brings up all the SIP settings.

VERY nice. I'll have to figure out how to actually trigger a call this way other than the above process which seems a bit awkward.

Thanks for the heads up!!!

Well, the first attempt to make this work failed. I set my dialing to Ask Each Call so that I could choose Internet calling and that worked. I entered the number and hit Dial and it popped up a box asking how I wanted to route the call (Cell or Internet).

I chose Internet and it instantly came back with an error that said: "Server unreachable".

So here are the settings:

Username: (For this I entered my VT 11-digit number 18565551212, for example)

Password: (For this I entered the password that was shown on my Control Panel for soft phone setups)

Server: (For this I set it to bumblebee.vtoc.net which is also in the soft phone info)

I also edited the Display Name which was set to a default of my phone number (username) and changed it to my name though I suspect this won't have any impact.

I'm connected the Wi-Fi here so that's not the issue and I tried resetting the display name to the default which had no impact.

Any ideas?

Okay, it helps if you actually put in the correct credentials. In this case the correct server which is bumblebee.vtnoc.net and not misspell vtnoc as vtoc.

Placed the first call that way and the other party answered but I couldn't hear anything and they hung up. Getting closer.

Placed a second call to a VT number and phone that sits right next to me at a friend's house. It rang twice. I picked up the phone and immediately I got a dial-tone on the phone. My cell gave me dead air.

Interestingly the ring happens INSTANTLY from the time I hit the dial button on the phone.

The next call to the same phone I was able to answer on the phone side (non-cell) and it gave me dead air as well as did the cell.

Apparently this functionality seems a bit not ready for prime-time.

I tried this using CM7 RC4 on a verizon phone and was able to connect and make outbound calls (didnt try inbound) - but the voice quality from me was very choppy, even on wifi.

I upgraded to the CM7 Stable version and now can't get it to work at all - nor can I get other sip dialers to work. I can connect to viatalk, see voicemail, even dial *123 and get into voicemail - but attempting to dial a number either timeouts, or 'hangs up' as soon as the call is placed.

I'm going to revert to RC4 to see if it's something introduced in the new ROM.

Ok - reverted back and was able to get it to work - though I think the issue I was having on the CM7 Stable was user-error.

If you dial a full-formed number - ex: 1-212-555-1212 - it always uses the mobile. If you dial a short number, 555-1212- it'll try to use VOIP. This works well for me as the primary burner of my cell minutes is a conference bridge that happens to be a local number. Would be nice to figure out how to make it use internet calling on all calls, though. And the quality is still bad - too bad to use regularly.

If you want an easy way to configure your Android for free wifi calling, right off your dial pad, check out freewifiphonecalls.com.

All web sites have to be created on some date, don't they? And what does Mexico have to do with it?

Hardly. I assume that is your site?

Yes. I'm a math professor from Texas who gave it up, packed up and moved to a warmer climate. Now, I just find things to entertain myself with. Since I like calling the states totally free, I figured others would too. I had a really hard time figuring it out with all the hundreds of crappy tutorials out there, especially to get a quality signal.

No he is probably a person concerned with security? Can you address the issue of security ?

Thanks DaveDude, you are correct. I prefer people to mention something like "I created this site, what do you think, check it out" instead of making it seem they happened to stumble across it.
Also, while I do love the country of Mexico, let's be honest as a brand new poster hawking a site created about a week ago is a bit suspect.
All that aside, when raising concerns about it having the site owner call me a white supremacist just for raising valid concerns will easily keep me from going there or pointing people to the site.
