Easy to use registrarI currently have a domain registered through 1&1. I am only using them for the domain registration; I'm not interested in their hosting offering. They are making it extremely cumbersome and slow to control my domain the way I want it - specifically I want to point the domain to my own DNS servers. (This is for a small project I'm working on.)
Looking for self-hosting-friendly registrars that let me control my domain without a lot of hassle. If I find a replacement I'll need to transfer my existing domain from 1&1 to the new outfit.
Appreciate any recommendations. |

1and1 has a confusing control panel, but once you get the hang of it, pointing to external DNS servers is really easy. My only complaint is that it takes a few minutes to process the request.
If you want domain privacy, you can't beat 1and1's price, as the privacy feature is included in the basic registration price: .coms $5 for the first year and $9 thereafter. Never had a registrar problem with them, although their hosting leaves a lot to be desired and has way too much downtime. |

A few minutes??? Try days. Updated website address in system, which locked my ability to make any changes for over 3 days (they said it would be 48 hours). On the 3rd day I had to call them (again) to get it fixed. That was finally fixed about 2-3 hours after I called them. That now lets me edit the NS records for the domain. But no! Wait! You cannot assign any name server you want - if the name server is in your own domain you have to: 1. first create those entries as subdomains (huh?) 2. wait 3 hours for the above to process 3. then you can assign IPs to those records 4. now wait 24 hours for that to process 5. then I'm supposed to be able to change my domain to use those NS records. I am not confident that will go without a hitch either, which will be more days. I want goddamn control of my f'ing domain without all this B.S. |

What about NameCheap?
I started transferring my domains to them from GoDaddy and I like them a lot more.
They are not perfect but I find them much better then GoDaddy and changes happen very quickly. |

Have you pointed a domain to your own name servers with NameCheap? |

Not sure what you mean by " update website address in system"? I've got about 20 websites on a 1and1 account. I update them regularly without issue. Obviously if I register a new domain, it takes 12 hours or so to propagate. For name servers, I go to the Domains menu and edit DNS. Can simply change name servers to anything I want. Alternatively, you can edit the individual MX records or whatever. |

I second the recommendation for NameCheap. I've had a few domains there for years and have always used my own name servers. Their control panel is one of the best I've used. |

After GoDaddy email hosting blocked GunBroker.com I have a problem with them. They didn't mark it as spam they just totally blocked them and another gun related host www.shopdunns.com . F GoDaddy. I have heard many many recommendations for NamesCheap and will switch over once my GoDaddy domains expire.
Edit: A little rant but GoDaddy censorship is BS. Business is business. I still have my second Amendment rights and GoDaddy blocking my gun related purchase emailes quite pisses me off.
Edit 2: GoDaddy's website has become less intuitive and more confusing over the years.
Edit 3: I had 1&1 as a host for a week before I asked for a refund. Horrible horrible support. |

said by Wily_One:Have you pointed a domain to your own name servers with NameCheap? Yes it's easy. If you mean point a domain at someone's existing DNS server it's as easy as Modify Domain -> Transfer DNS to webhost. If you mean your own server not registerd anywhere else you'd also need to click "NameServer Registration" |

Thanks. I finally got 1&1 pointing to my NS, but I'll give NameCheap a look.
One last question: does NameCheap support IPv6 addresses? (For everything, but specifically for the NS records.) |

Yes, for both their DNS (AAAA records) and registering your own nameservers: » community.namecheap.com/ ··· 0&t=2560 |

Thanks - that corroborates what SixXS listed: no mixed IPv4+IPv6. |

Re: Easy to use registrarI don't use 1&1.
I do like 123-reg.co.uk - never let me down. Propagation is pretty fast as well.
Unfortunately both are part of the fasthosts group- they ripped me off for a years worth of hosting that I tried to cancel after 3 hours. |
