Looking for internet service in Strafford, MO

We currently have a provider that is using fixed wireless. One of the problems we're having are that the service goes out every time it rains. The ISP is claiming that their APs are being struck by lightning. We had a thunderstorm this past Friday and they didn't have us back up until yesterday (Monday) at around 1PM-2PM.

That's enough of an issue for us to look for someone else anyway, but their customer service is terrible. Our speeds were horrendously slow from the end of November until about the beginning of March. I finally contacted them to find out why. Apparently there was some sort of account issue, they said we hadn't paid the bill, yet we had. They did see that we had been paying, so I don't know exactly what the problem was, but it was their mistake. So we asked for some sort of credit, at least half of the bill from that time period, and they would not do anything for us.

So with this last outage, we called and demanded that the bill be adjusted. After complaining that it's expensive to fix these problems, they did finally say that there will be some sort of adjustment.

So we're too far out to get DSL and I'm not impressed with satellite, Wild Blue is at capacity and the best that Hughes can offer is 2 Mb down with a download cap of 400 MB per 24 hour period. I think that leaves us with wireless, either fixed or mobile.

Can anyone recommend a specific ISP or have any advice?

I take it Cox does not service your area?
It looks like Clearwire is a no go for you.
How much data do you use? A cellular provider will most likely cap you at 5 GB per month. Plus your bandwidth will be pretty limited. Probably less than 1.5 down and less than 1 up.

It looks like you are in the boondocks outside of Springfield, The WISP, crappy as they may be, could actually be a blessing to you. Without them your only option would probably be dialup.

If you have close neighbors with the same issue, you might want to look at setting up a co-op and share a T1.

I just might be the most "licensed" S.O.B. you know.

The local cable company is Mediacom, but they don't provide service out this far.

I don't disagree with you that the WISP may be the best we can do. The problem is that I do not pay the bill, my housemates do, and they're pretty fed up with the problems. I would continue to put up with it until, hopefully, something better came along.
