New computer build Power button problem

Basically i just built a new computer, everything is where it should be, and the computer works perfectly fine. I however cannot figure out why the power button on the case does nothing, but the restart button acts as the power button. The restart button turns the computer on an off, and the power button does absolutely nothing. All the cables are where they should be i hope. The motherboard is a nForce MCP 720a

Double-Check your Front Panel connections to the Header on the Mobo... Sounds like you're connected 1 pin/position off...

I checked, they are all in...im slightly confused, there are 2 molex power connectors coming from the front panel. One has pegs, and i connected it to the power supply, the other has holes and i have no connections that fit it. I assumed that I only had to connect 1 because the two molex connectors are attached to one another.

As said wired wrong...

It is so then when you use one plug it gives you another... aka you did not lose a molex connector.

The molex you're referring to is for a fan or the power light, and has nothing to do with your issue.

As said, the actual connections to the motherboard are incorrect.

I will take a picture of the cords, and the connectors on the motherboard, maybe someone can help me. I don't see how anything could be in the wrong spot, but i may be wrong.

Go back and read the instructions for the MB. No big deal, as you will figure out the Front Panel connections.

you have the pwr and reset wiring backwards (at best).

On most ATX motherboards there are 5 pins on top and 4 pins on the bottom for that interface, something like:

* * * * *
   * * * *

The top row is generally as follows:

nothing, Reset, Reset, HD LED-, HD LED+

the bottom row is generally as follows:

(no pin) Pwr, Pwr, Pwr LED-, Pwr LED+

edit; added some  's to indent the second row to make more clear.

Happy to help & glad that was all it was, I memorized that layout when I first started repairing & building computers. As long as you remember the powers go together (pwr sw, pwr light) and nothing else (no extra pin) goes with power you are solid. Very easy to remember if desired
