Nanny cam

Nanny cam catches elder abuse at upscale retirement home

A Delaware County woman has been charged in a case of elder abuse at a well-known retirement home after she was allegedly caught on tape by the family's "nanny cam."

(names removed), an employee of the (name removed), was charged with aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy, harassment and neglect of a care-dependant person, according to court documents. Bail was set and (name removed) was remanded to the Delaware County jail.

(name removed), a 78-year-old woman with dementia, told her daughter (name removed), that she was being "punched and slapped" by staff at the nursing facility. The family reported the incident to the administration, who attributed the allegations to (name removed) dementia, according to court documents.

The family installed a "nanny cam" hidden in a clock in (name removed) room after finding bruising on her left hand and wrist at a later date. The video showed (name removed) striking the victim in the face and head area while attempting to pull a shirt over her head, according to court documents.

The video also showed (name removed), along with two other employees, laughing, and mocking the mental condition of (name removed) for 12 minutes while the victim "stood naked from the waist up attempting to cover her breasts." One of the other employees danced holding on to the post of (name removed) bed "as if she were dancing on a 'stripper pole,'" according to court documents.

Additional arrests are expected, said (name removed), assistant district attorney.

This is disgusting.....not sure if Nanny Cam is computer related, however, for those with elderly in Homes computer cams could be a good use for their protection.

I wonder how they will try to explain this away as it sounds like the video is rather compelling, chalk up one for the Nanny cam.

abuse to a child or elderly person.....is such cowardly, sick-minded behavior.
An yet, there are story after story of such incidents......an so often its by persons entrusted to care for the helpless,
It does not really touch home with the average person that there is a need to continue protecting their love ones after they are in Homes or hospitals.
Proof is essential. An cams could easily give such proof. How to go about setting up a computer cam in such an environment is not something I have given much thought, however, perhaps the time has arrived for the public to insist that hospitals, nursing homes, etc., install surveillance systems......its not all that expensive....an perhaps would prevent incidents of abuse.
surveillance systems.....are everywhere....but not in hospital rooms or nursing homes......now why is that ?

You can read the info for yourself. It's very sad but this kind of thing is happening more and more in most large communities and in many smaller ones.

I left the names in tact as they are already public access and have already been printed. Otherwise, I would have left all names out or not even posted the link. I feel the more people read about such things, the better it is. We have got to wise up and know what's happening to our elders. Sticking one's head in the sand doesn't help, so names are in the link should they be important to anyone.

Recently I was in a discussion as to use of video cameras in institutions and while I have some reservations (I'd like people to behave because its the right thing to do, rather then behaving because there is a camera watching (given video is typically only ever used to punish, it tends to upset people, if we also used video to reward people for good behavior then they wouldn't have so many negative feelings about it), plus some people are rather good at staging portions of events in camera view for their 'benefit', yes sometimes the camera can be fooled), it is cases like this that make you want to put in video surveillance everywhere.

Of course I fear that Samirah Traynham will get off on some sort of technically around the camera being installed without consent of the nursing home, but ultimately the issue is Lois will now be treated with the respect she deserves. I would also be checking other patients for signs of abuse as well (working with dementia patients is difficult but abuse is abuse and can't be tolerated).

My kids found out many years ago, never mess with a security guy who had a collection of surveillance cameras as we had a case of the missing treats from our food storage room and one well place camera and we found out who 'I don't know' was

This nursing home who attributed the complaint to the dementia is typical of a lot of people with the same ideas on this disease.. or else they were just pulling the wool over the family's eyes. Dementia patients may not always see what is there.. and "abuse" could be something as simple as getting chicken for dinner when they wanted beef but at least the family realized there was SOME problem with the patient unlike that nursing home. Where were the documentation of bruises on the patient, surely there were an inordinate number? The state needs to look into this nursing home closer for possible cover-up and other instances of physical and even mental abuse.

Wow, this happened in the town I live in. Didn't even know it happened until I looked at the story.

One thing to note is that these homes around here, especially that one, tend to hire poor people out of the city (Philadelphia) to cut on costs. I guess this is one side effect of hiring cheap labor.

I don't know that you can attribute it to cheap labor. We had a similar case near here, and the two nurses who committed the offenses were stupid enough to record their deeds. They obviously had enough $$ for cameras/cell phones.

I'd love to believe it was a case of poor folks who don't know better, but it's more a comment on the values of society in general.

I don't mean they were ignorant of what they were doing, I mean that they hire dodgy employees for cheap instead of hiring more expensive employees with experience / education in the field.
