Possible to test a phone jack with a laptop?

Was just wondering? I don't want to go out and buy a phone to see if my phone jack works.

I'm going to use it for internet but I want to make sure the jack works before I order it .

Is the jack active for a regular phone?

I just moved in to the apartment so I'm not sure.

Are you referring to a phone jack port on my laptop tearabite? If so yes.

But I'm wondering what do I do after I plug it in to my laptop. I tried researching online and didn't find anything.

Assuming the modem works, open hypertrm, select the com port associated with the modem. Once connected to the modem type ATDT followed by your cellphone number and hit return.. If you did it right and if the line works your cellphone should ring.

you could also use the Dialer program (executable by typing 'dialer' in the run prompt) if you can't find it.

Keep in mind what TearAbite See Profile suggested will only work if there is dial-tone on the line and service is in force. Most likely the local phone company disabled dial-tone when the previous resident canceled service.

If you order phone service the local phone company will have to activate it.

Is dialup your only option? That is going to be painfully slow by modern standards.

Be sure the building doesn't have a PBX system, or you'll likely destroy your modem: »www.laptoptravel.com/Art ··· x?ID=223

DSL uses the same wires as the phone but it does not require dial-tone.

If you order DSL the provider will have to make sure the connection is good all the way to your apartment.
