 | Bell cheating? I has been on with Bell's DSL Essential Plus plan for 7 days. I got an average 1.8GB usage per day, according to Bell's online metering from my account. I did NO internet TV, no music/video download, no file larger than 5MB download and very few. I have a VOIP box with two account, 24 hr connected, but only make about 15 min call per day. I surf for news and forum for about 6 hrs per day. The modem comes from Bell, shows a 1.89GB down, and 0.56GB up. ! And the online metering says I have done 9.6GB down and 2.8GB up!!
Oh, NO one steal my wireless network, I hide SSID, use WPA2, and MAC filter.
What happened? I guess the only explanation is: Bell cheating. But Bell's tech says: 1.it's normal (absolutely not) 2.Someone must use your usage (I use it myself. I dream walk??) 3.VOIP did it (if I call 24 hrs, I think 30x24=0.72GB) |

| Cancel the service, move to a provider that doesnt gouge you for bandwidth.
if you're only with bell for 7 days you should be able to cancel even if you signed a contract. -- BUCK FELL. From UBB to AVP. Same wolf in sheep's clothing. |

This company has a long sordid history of this kind of stuff.
See links above for Teksavvy and Electronic Box. There are others. Move on. You too can live a Bhell-free life.
Also, you may want to consider getting a router that does all the usage monitoring for you, for your entire network.

 | reply to GEO Personally, I too would get rid of Bhell and go with an independent. But say that isn't an option? What I would do is physically disconnect your network from router for a day. Just leave the router connected to your modem. After 1 day, check your usage. Then you will have a good idea if they are indeed cheating you, and more of a reason to ditch them. |

| reply to GEO To prove without a doubt, you need to be disconnected for 2 nights. And you need to do a proper PPPoE session teardown.
When you do the teardown, it is supposed to send an accounting record to their radius server. And then they will scan at 03:00 for any traffic left since that last radius record.
So the next day, you may still see activity because of the leftovers from accounting that are done at 03:00. So you have to wait until the day after (2 cycles of going past 03:00 am) before checking if usage grew in the last 24 hours).
Then, you can reconnect. |

The modem looks like it was running over a period of 6 days so the modem's data should be correct. |

I ask Bell tech they said they cannot do this. But I need to pay Bell whatever they metered.... |

| reply to GEO PPPoE teardown: You need to tell your router to close the PPPoE session.
This way, it sends a message to Bell that the PPPoE session is closed, your IP address is released. Any traffic destined to that IP address will not be billed to you because it would no longer be associated with you.
If your PPPoE session isn'.t prpoerly terminated, it will continue to exist for some time until Bell decides to time it out (I don't know if Bell does that). During that time any traffic destined to your IP address will continue to flow through the BAS to your modem (and thus be counted) even though your router/modem will not accept it.
(your router may be integrated with the modem to confuse things). |

On the other hand, 25GB/mo (6.125GB/week for a non-leap February) is more than most Bell customers use.

 | reply to jfmezei I cannot find a proper setting function of your mentioned from Bell's integrated modem-router. Few custom function left. I cannot even turn the integrated router off and attach my own to set.
I know if I only NOT use on my side, Bell still can declaim that I ACTURALLY use and they have RECORDS.
That means, I have to return the modem back to Bell and buy a new one with full function and ask Bell to activate it with my account? |

| edit your login creditentials and change your username to test@test and put "test" as password. This gives you a non routable IP address.
But there should be a way on your modem to disconnect your PPPoE session.
You might wish to specify what brand/model of modem you have and some folks here might be able to guide you on how to terminate your pppoe session. |

Actual usage is: 1.89GB down, and 0.56GB up.
The 9.6GB down and 2.8GB up!! is the background noise of the internet(Various attacks and what have you.) in addition to Bell's free money factor. |

1 edit | He might have more data than he thinks due to "background" out on the internet but he shouldn't have to pay for any that's not going through his router that he actually uses, nobody else does. I have about the same usage he has and listen to the radio too and it amounts to about 360Mb per day or 11Gb per month. There are programs like Networx he can install to measure the usage if he wants to find out what it is for sure. |
