 | [WHR-G300NV2] Unable to get my VPN connection to work Hi,
I have a WHR-G300N V2 router (updated to firmware Ver.1.82) and I'm trying to set up a PPTP-VPN network so that I can access my NAS from outside my home network. However I cannot get it to work, so after too much reading I decided to post it here.
First of all, I have to mention that using this configuration I am able to connect to the VPN from inside my home network (that is, the same network indeed). Maybe this is completely normal and has no relevance, but just in case. Anyway, it doesn't work from outside the network (I've been trying from university).
My fixed IP address is let's say 64.X.X.X and my router's IP address is 192.168.11.1
Then, in the router's configuration page I have set the following settings:
In Internet/LAN > VPN Server I checked the PPTP server box and leave everything in the advanced configuration as default, that is, automatic IP addresses for server (in this case is 172.31.18.1), client and DNS server. Also I've noticed that probably my NAS subnetwork (192.168.11.X) and the client's subnetwork (which would be 172.31.18.X) should be the same and otherwise I will not be able to access it, am I right? If so, how to solve this? Because I think I cannot set manually the server's IP address to one of the 192.168.11.X subnetwork.
Then in the PPTP user list I added a user, set a password and leave the settings the way it is, obtaining the IP address automatically from the DHCP server.
Finally I think port 1723 has to be redirected, so went into the port forwarding page and forward it to the Internet IP address to the PPTP server address (172.31.18.1). Not sure whether this is correct or should it be to the router's address?
That's on the router's side, then on my MacBook Pro I set up a new PPTP connection, being the server address my IP address, that is this 64.X.X.X. I have also tried to connect to it from my HTC Hero using a 3G connection with the same results.
I think that's it, I don't know what I am doing wrong but I cannot get it to work, so any help and/or advise would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
