 | New office installation - Part 2: Electric Boogaloo Some of you may remember the last thread with the new office infrastructure. If not, please check it out. But what was pointed out then was that I had a server room, but no servers.
Lo and behold, that is about to change.
It's still a work in process, but I'll post more pictures as it progresses. Here are some for now. Enjoy! |

 | reply to mikkopel Is it me, or does it look like that EqualLogic is bowing in pic3? |
|
 | Yeah it does... I didn't notice it before. Maybe it's the angle. It kind of looks like the APC is bowing too, but to the opposite direction. |

You can see it in all the pictures if you look carefully. |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | reply to mikkopel I was going to just say the camera is causing that effect. It's a common issue with camera phone images. |
|
 | Yep, it's the camera lens.
Bear with me here, the PowerEdges are on their way, and once I get them, I'll post more. |

Uh oh... This teaches me about being impatient! It appears that the rack mount for the PV114X is just a bit too short... It won't reach. In the second picture it's fully extended.
So now I have to uninstall a bunch of stuff so I can move the rear rack whatever that thing is called... |
|
 | Uhg! Been there before... |

Ok here goes more pictures... Everyone else is out on Good Friday, but I'm in the office, since I had to swap out a module in a switch to be able to hook up the new servers.
Oh by the way, I'm still pretty much a novice with racks, so comments, please.
Actually, if you'll notice there's a pretty big mistake in one of the pictures with the way the rack is configured. But fortunately it was an easy fix and in the next picture you may see that it's fixed.
Still gotta get a few blanking panels... The room is air conditioned, but I think they make the rack look so much nicer. |

Is that a Dell tape backup drive I see at the top there? |

Unless you are taking the tapes off site or putting them in a fire proof safe, why not just backup to disk or offsite cloud backup? |
|
 | reply to mikkopel Add two cable management arms to the units on sidling rails. Saves the trouble of powering down and unplugging if you need to get inside and swap a fan, or something else; I mean you have the rails, might as well use them.
Love those little horizontal slotted mounting arms (last pic supporting network cabling to the switch and the cable to the tape backup), do you have a part number for them? |
|
 | reply to mikkopel Yes it's a PowerVault LTO-4 tape drive. The tapes are stored in a different building from the servers, and two latest ones are taken offsite every workday. The tapes are password protected against loss.
To me, it's just another level of backup redundancy. Yes, we have redundant hard drives, and hopefully eventually we'll have another Equallogic in a different building. But even if we did that, I would still probably advocate using tape backups as the ultimate last-resort backup solution.
They're relatively inexpensive. They don't take that much space, or effort. They are mechanically simple, and they provide a convenient way of archival.
The only thing where tapes are bad is the speed of recovery. But if the server room burns down, it probably won't make a lot of difference at that point anyway. |

 | reply to Thane_Bitter The bars are Middle Atlantic LBP-2A.
Yeah, the servers came with cable management arms. It actually was pretty much a coin toss whether to use them or not... I'll see how it goes, I might still add them. |

We are doing backup to disk and a couple of the older mainframes are still tape since they have to be... (custom code) |
