| America's Best/2-Pair Any Good? I just had my eye exam and new glasses are no longer unavoidable. I so can't afford another $1,200 pair like the ones I have. Does anyone have *personal* (as in you or someone in your immediate circle of family and friends), recent experience buying from America's Best? Is their 2 pair for $99.95 just a ploy to get you in and then they hit you with all sorts of "extras" that winds up costing way more? Or, can you actually walk out with two pairs of good quality glasses for that price? I'm guessing they'd be a tad more for me since I have progressive lenses...but not more than, say, $150 all told with anti-glare, UV and anti-scratch coatings. -- "Keep calm and carry on." |

| Dunno. I recently went to vision works, Hour Eyes is the same marketing chain in your area. And yes they were "extras".
And to top it all off when all was said and done, and the card charged, I then learned that I would not have my glasses in an hour, the best lenses that I ordered had to be special ordered and would take 2 weeks. They lied, it was past 3 weeks.
Whatever coating I got is a little strange. It is fine liiking through them, but every so often I see (and consciously look for at times) a mirror-like reflection of what is behind me. If I look at say flourscent lights they are fine, if I see them as a reflection in the glasses from behind me, they are green.
Ended up paying for the two pair special and was over $400 Shoulda gone back to Penny's dept but the woman who looked out for me there retired and I was put off by the new one's attitude. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

| Hmmmmmm...
I got taken for a ride by Hour Eyes when I moved here 20 years ago. Over $600 for my regular (single-vision at the time) glasses, plus a pair of mid-distance glasses for computer work. They had a "computer professional" special for the 2 for $199. Riiiiiiiiiight. I had to take both of them back twice because the coating was crazing/peeling off. The second time they wanted to charge me to fix it!
Sterling, where I got the ones I have was pretty good, just too expensive for me right now (I was billing $300/hr when I got these...lucky if I can get 1/4-1/2 of that these days). I was thinking AB because there's one just a few blocks from me down around L Street. Sears and Penney's did occur to me, but there isn't one convenient, and I have heard mostly not-encouraging things about them. -- "Keep calm and carry on." |

| Yeah, the $99 is for basic frames and lenses. Nothing brand name. I used them back in college.
Do you have vision insurance? If so, go to Pearl or Lens Crafters, stuff usually comes out 40% cheaper or so.
Don't skimp on lenses. Lightweight, anti-glare go a long way to comfort, especially if you're wearing them all day for work. If anything skimp on the frames. In-house brand will hold the lenses on your face just as well as Calvin Kleins. |

I have also had decent glasses made at Sears. -- Simple rules - no offsides, no intent to maim, everything else is all good! |
