Amamba join:2007-07-28 West Bloomfield, MI | Looking for a cheap VOIP with BYOD - is ViaTalk OK ? I have an old Sunrocket "Gizmo" ATA and I am looking for a decent VOIP provider that lets me use my own device. Would you recommend ViaTalk ?
Also, is there a trial period ? I don't want to sign up & then find out the service is crappy. |

| I have had Viatalk for well over two years now. No complaints or problems as of yet. Heck I even renewing again. They are great and their feature selection is the best. You will get alot of hate posts for this provider but many come from people who do BYOD. I have their managed box and what ever I want to do I just tell them and they do all the provisioning for ya. I would just let them give you a box. You don't have to pay for it any more up front. But if you choose to bring your own BYOD be prepared for a little tinkering but its easy. |

We like having two incoming/outgoing lines with the same number, for those moments when two of us want to use the phone at the same time.
I still wish VT would forgive the return of the PAP2 after a set time of service -- five years would be fine -- rather than demanding an intact return or incurring charges, but I don't suspect that will change. |

| reply to Amamba As mentioned the two line feature isn't available for BYOD. You didn't mention type of ATA you have from Sunrocket but the AC-211 does work once you unlock it. I have mine configured as backup in case VT supplied ata fails. Ran it for about a month with no problems.
Viatalk did away with annual contracts. Think its month to month only now. Figured they might do some kind of birthday sell around now that's when they first started offering the 2 years for $199. (I think) Started my service 5 years ago yesterday and I am good until Jan 2013. |

I jumped on a $100 renewal for a year and $79 for a second year sometime last year when that was available. Not sure what I will do in 2013 but that is a long time away. Had Viatalk since June 2006. |

I've never quite understood going BYOD. Unless you (the OP) really want to tinker, I would follow the advice of dcurrey and use your existing ATA as a backup.
A few years back a lightning strike in my neighborhood fried my VT supplied ATA. Since I was not BYOD, VT replaced the device. Had I been using my own device, I would have had to replace it myself. I went a few days with no device, but with Network Down Forwarding, all incoming calls were sent to my cell and my family members made our outgoing calls with our own cells. |

| reply to Amamba So, did you make a decision? Who'd you go with and how's the experience? There are a few well spoken of providers on these forums, most seem to be what you make of them.
I had the AC-211 and Inno from SunRocket days. I didn't like the Inno for several reasons so sold it, I keep the AC-211 preconfigured for VT in a box. I use the SPA2102 (NAised) as my preferred BYOD device with VT and the service works great. I had 2 full functioning lines (in & out) with G5 on line2, now I have 1.5 lines, where line 2 can only make outgoing calls except for the very few calls made to its' SIP IP address. I believe 4+yrs on VT - 2k outgoing minutes for $11+ |
